Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Segnini.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My life purpose has always been to be an advocate for mental health and create meaningful impact in my community, this was my motivation to become a psychotherapist. I immigrated from Venezuela to Florida when I completed my BS in Psychology, completed my MS in Mental Health Counseling in Nova Southeastern University, I completed my internships at the Woodmont hospital so I could be exposed to the most critical cases.
After graduating, my first job was in community mental health, where I eas exposed to a wide range of ages and mental health conditions and challenges. Working in community mental health was intense, a big caseload with difficult circumstances, underpaid, and on the verge of burn out in my early career, I decided to explore my opportunities in private practice, where I became the only therapist of a psychiatric group practice. Working in private practice allowed me to learn about psychopharmacology, credentialing, billing, and business management; therefore in 2020 I decided to start a counseling practice with a business partner; due to differences in business management I felt obligated to terminate this partnership; I must admit I was scared, but the fear of not trying on my own become scarier than going back to be an employee; and this is how Powerful Mental Health was born, as a result of my resilience, me finding my own Power and trusting myself.
Becoming an entrepeneur has allowed me to exercise my creative power, as I’m always looking for ways to expand my business, while also practicing my leadership skills as a supervisor for therapists and supporting them finding their own strength and I feel I’m able to reach more people through them. Been the CEO and Clinical Supervisor of a Hispanic Women owned and staffed company is an honor and responsibility that fulfills my life purpose to a bigger extend that I ever imagined and I’m so grateful for how powerful our purpose is.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey to this stage in my career had some challenges that definitively helped me grow; from immigrating to USA on my own and not having clear guidance and mentorship until my internships. Afterwards having a large caseload with extense needs and being underpaid as my first job as a psychotherapist. Another challenge I had to overcome was building a brand that I believed in, while dealing with a business partner with different approaches to management and finances; until ultimately having to make the decision to walk away and build ing and leading my own company: Powerful Mental Health with the support of an amazing team and skillful therapists.
