Exploring Life & Business with Fitz-Gerald Cushnie of Self Place and Sacred Self Sanctuary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fitz-Gerald Cushnie.

Fitz-Gerald Cushnie

Hi Fitz-Gerald, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey has always been one of walking with the Most High – listening, trusting, and saying yes when called. From childhood, I lived in deep awareness of Divine Presence. I was raised in a loving Seventh‑day Adventist home, where reverence for God was natural, but my relationship with the Divine extended beyond what church or scripture described – what took root in me was far more than belief. It was a relationship. Not something taught – but an experience of God as a constant companionship – always with me, guiding and revealing truth through every season of my life.

As I moved through life, I found myself being a space of support for others – friends, family, even strangers – not through effort, but by nature. Before founding Self Place and Sacred Self Sanctuary, I spent many years in the field of technology – earning degrees in Computer Science, Information Science, and Technology Management, and serving in leadership roles in software development and program management. Even then, I found myself being the person others came to for guidance, clarity, or peace – friends, family, even strangers. Though I enjoyed my work, I knew that wasn’t my final place of service. I always felt that my life was meant to be used in a way that helped people heal, grow, and remember God within themselves.

Over the years, I became increasingly aware of how many people were struggling – burdened by life, feeling unseen or unsafe to express themselves truthfully, even with those closest to them. I saw the growing need for spaces rooted in love, acceptance, and non‑judgment. And because I naturally hold others in a peaceful, healing energy of Divine presence, I realized that this offering wasn’t something I had to create – it was something I already was.

Years ago, I shared with friends my dream of opening a sacred community space – a place of yoga, meditation, stillness, and conversation. Then one day, a friend approached me and said, “Let’s build a wellness center together.” She offered and insisted on being the one to cover the initial deposit to secure the location – to which, I say “I am grateful to you and Divine.” I knew immediately that this was a Divine invitation, and I said yes. Though she later stepped away from the project, I chose to continue. That yes was about answering God’s call. I consecrated my life in that moment, declaring again to the Most High that if I did nothing else in this lifetime, I would live as a vessel for Divine service.

That was the birth of Self Place, which opened its doors in 2022 – a meditation and holistic wellness center designed as a sanctuary for self‑healing, self‑remembrance, and alignment with Divine essence. Every part of it – from the programs to the energy of the space – was created with love, prayer, and intentionality. My background in technology even supported the journey, allowing me to personally design the website, app, and creative materials that now carry the message outward. Besides my original partner’s contribution to the initial deposit at the very beginning, as the journey continued and I became the sole steward of the center, the full investment – from programming, marketing, workshops, events, and day-to-day operations – has come entirely from my personal savings. It was never about creating a business venture; it was about answering a Divine call, and standing fully in devotion, trusting that everything needed would come as I walked in obedience.

In 2023, I established Sacred Self Sanctuary, a nonprofit extension of this work, to make healing accessible to all. This year, the organization received its 501(c)(3) approval and began expanding its reach through new initiatives and a dedicated website. Sacred Self Sanctuary ensures that anyone – regardless of financial situation – can access the care, reflection, and spiritual support they deserve.

Today, I live fully aligned in service. My relationship with God is lived – in conversation, meditation, stillness, and action. Self Place and Sacred Self Sanctuary are simply expressions of that relationship – living invitations for others to return to peace, truth, and Divine presence within themselves.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not always been smooth – but it has always been Divinely guided. One of the biggest challenges has been the financial investment, as I’ve funded Self Place and Sacred Self Sanctuary primarily from my personal savings, trusting that the provision would meet the vision. This path was never about profit, but about purpose – and purpose often requires sacrifice. I said yes to walking this journey in faith, and that means surrendering comfort at times to stay true to the call.

Another challenge was navigating it alone once my original partner had to step away shortly after the journey began. Though her initial contribution helped secure the space and some equipment, I was left to carry the full weight of building and sustaining the vision. It was a test of both my inner strength and trust in the Most High.

There have also been moments of doubt – not in my purpose, but in how it would all come together. Being someone who holds a deeply spiritual and nontraditional approach to wellness, I had to trust that the right people would find me, even if I wasn’t following mainstream business models or approaches. And they have. People are magnetized to this work not because of marketing, but because of the energy and Divine presence they feel when they step into the space or sit with me.

But even with these challenges, I wouldn’t change anything. I’ve learned to lean even deeper into my connection with the Divine, to listen more carefully, and to keep walking in love, no matter how uncertain the path may seem.

Sacred Self Sanctuary, a nonprofit extension of this work, was born to make healing and wellness more accessible to all – especially those who may not feel safe or supported in traditional spaces. Our mission is to offer safe, loving, and nonjudgmental support, rooted in truth, compassion, and the unconditional love of the Most High. Through this platform, we offer free and low-cost services, community programming, and holistic support that touches the soul and uplifts the spirit.
What sets us apart is that everything we offer is guided by Divine alignment. Sessions are never rushed or formulaic – they are present-moment led, trauma-aware, and deeply intuitive. Our space carries a frequency that people feel before a single word is spoken. Many clients have said, “Your presence alone is healing,” and we honor that sacred role with humility and reverence.
We’re most proud that Self Place has become a beacon of love, truth, and healing – especially for those who have felt unseen, unheard, or unsupported in traditional spaces. Here, people are held, not fixed. Honored, not judged. And reminded that they are never alone.
We invite all who are seeking deeper connection, emotional clarity, spiritual support, or simply a place to breathe and be – to come experience this sacred work. Whether it’s a private session, a group circle, or a community class, you are welcome here.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Make an agreement with your Self at the very beginning: to move through the journey with compassion, gentleness, forgiveness, and deep self-trust. No matter what challenges come – and they will come – commit to being your own sacred companion. Offer yourself the same kindness you would extend to a child learning to walk: with patience, presence, and love.

There will be moments when the path feels unclear, or when things don’t unfold as quickly or smoothly as you imagined. Let those moments be invitations – not to force or panic – but to pause, to rest, and to trust that even when nothing seems to be “happening,” the Divine is still at work. Life is never off-track when you’re aligned with truth.
Be willing to release what no longer serves. This work will often ask you to say goodbye to old versions of yourself – outdated stories, limiting beliefs, unconscious patterns, ego-driven expectations. Let them go with gratitude. Their season is complete.

Stay deeply connected to your “why.” For me, this work was never about building a business – it was about creating sacred space where Divine presence could be felt, healing could unfold, and people could remember who they truly are. Keep coming back to your inner compass. Be led by love, not pressure. Be led by truth, not titles. Be led by Spirit, not strategy alone.

Also – allow your spiritual sensitivity to be a strength, not something to hide or manage. Your presence is often your greatest gift. People feel the energy behind your words, your work, your space. The more you stay rooted in integrity, alignment, and Divine connection, the more that quiet power will radiate through everything you create.
And lastly – do not be afraid to begin before everything is “ready.” Sacred work is often refined through experience, not perfection. Trust what you carry. Honor what is being born through you. The world needs more spaces of safety, love, and presence. If that’s what you’re offering, you are already aligned with something far greater than yourself.

Let your life be the offering. Let your overall goal be to be a living embodiment of Divine essence.
