Al Huggins shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Al, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
At the moment, I find myself in a phase of exploration, taking a mental break from my usual path. I am fully aware of my direction and the goals I aim to achieve, but I feel the need for a timeout to recharge. This wandering is a necessary part of my journey, allowing me to reflect and gather my thoughts before moving forward.
I would like to address more than one icebreaker question here, particularly focusing on my morning routine during the first 90 minutes after I wake up. Typically, I start my day by prioritizing my thoughts, which can vary depending on my schedule. I take deep breaths and engage in stretching exercises, but the most crucial part of my morning is meditating or praying. This practice helps me center myself before I tackle the day’s challenges.
I feel a strong urge to embark on the journey of starting a new company, although I am grappling with some fears and my energy levels aren’t what they used to be.
The last time I experienced true joy was during an art exhibition I organized, which featured around ten artists I had collaborated with over the past five years. The excitement shared among everyone involved, coupled with the overwhelming support the exhibition received, created an unforgettable atmosphere.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am AL Huggins, the proud owner of Art n Soul, where we immerse ourselves in all facets of the art world, creating unforgettable experiences. Our mission is to amplify the voices of artists, ensuring they are represented in spaces where they may not have a presence. With over a decade of experience as an arts and event consultant for various cities, I have dedicated myself to integrating art into events and ensuring that artists receive the recognition they deserve. Additionally, I founded The Art Hub, a nonprofit organization that emerged from Art n Soul, aimed at providing artistic programs for young men in inner cities. This initiative is led by talented artists who mentor students across diverse artistic mediums.
Under the Art n Soul banner, we have successfully produced numerous events that spotlight emerging artists, fostering a vibrant community of creativity. Our efforts have garnered significant support, allowing us to cultivate strong relationships with various universities and corporations. We remain committed to bringing enriching events to the community, with plans already underway for our 2026 initiatives.
As we look to the future, we are excited to expand our reach through artist talks and international collaborations, connecting with artists from around the globe. Our journey is one of passion and purpose, and we are dedicated to nurturing the artistic spirit in every endeavor we undertake.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I once felt adrift in a world that seemed to define me, yet through this journey, I discovered my true self. There were moments when I experienced a profound sense of empowerment, not through dominance, but through understanding my own strength. At one point, I contemplated abandoning my venture, Art n Soul, when a poignant question arose: “Do you not have people relying on you to support their families?” This inquiry served as both a wake-up call and a humbling reminder of my responsibilities.
People have often asked if I feel the need to justify my decisions to others, to explain why certain outcomes did not materialize. My response has always been clear: the journey begins and ends with me. This realization has been both powerful and humbling, reinforcing the notion that I am the architect of my own destiny. The relationships that have profoundly shaped my life are those with my mentors and the wise elders who have guided me. I find great joy in listening to their stories of the past, as they offer invaluable lessons and insights.
As a child, I was often told that I would achieve great things, a belief that fueled my ambitions. However, as an adult, my experiences, particularly through interviews for Canvas Rebels, have challenged that notion. The journey has been filled with lessons, including those learned from a few romantic relationships, which have imparted the wisdom of the heart. Ultimately, it is through these experiences that I continue to grow and redefine my path.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I faced numerous moments where I nearly gave up, grappling with both success and my emotions. It became clear to me that achieving success is not a straightforward journey, and managing my feelings while navigating this lesson was crucial. By confronting my pain and recognizing the joy that my company and its services bring, I discovered my true strength. Engaging with the youth and listening to their feedback was transformative, opening my eyes to new possibilities.
The primary fear that held me back was the fear of failure. For a long time, I was paralyzed by the thought of not succeeding, failing to realize that setbacks are an integral part of growth. Although I still encounter fears and challenges, I now possess a deeper understanding of how to navigate through them.
With each experience, I have gained valuable wisdom that helps me face obstacles with greater confidence. Embracing the journey, including its ups and downs, has empowered me to move forward. I am learning to accept that both success and failure are essential components of my path.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One project I am deeply committed to is reaching out to young Black men. Having once been in their shoes, I understand the unique challenges they face. Regardless of the industry I find myself in, I will prioritize sharing my experiences, mentoring, and providing a support system for them.
My dedication to this cause was further ignited by a conversation with a young man who expressed that he rarely sees successful role models in his daily life. His words resonated with me and reinforced my belief that I need to be more present—not for recognition, but to genuinely support young Black men everywhere.
I view this mission as a calling, one that drives me to make a meaningful impact. By being available and accessible, I hope to inspire and uplift the next generation, helping them navigate their paths with confidence and resilience.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I dedicate myself to this every day, but if I were aware that I only had ten years left, I would stop overthinking. While I’ve made progress, my tendency to overanalyze continues to be a barrier. I would channel my energy into making a meaningful impact on the world and building a brand that lasts a century.
My aspiration is for people to recognize my contributions to the arts, the youth, and the support I provide in helping others achieve their goals. Reflecting on the past decade, I realize I have accomplished a great deal and gained valuable insights. However, I now feel a stronger drive to pursue larger goals that will help establish the legacy I envision.
As I look ahead, I am motivated to leave a lasting impression that resonates with future generations. The journey has taught me the importance of focus and determination, and I am committed to making the most of the time I have. My hope is to inspire others while creating a meaningful narrative that reflects my values and aspirations.
