Justin, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, I am enjoying diving nearly every day. Whether it is instructing, fun diving, or conservation efforts it is impossible for me to say no to these dives!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Justin Benson, and I’m the founder of Wanderlust Hats & Apparel, an ocean-inspired lifestyle brand born from my decade-long career as a professional diver and my love for the sea. Wanderlust was created to capture the spirit of adventure that connects all who are drawn to the water—divers, travelers, and dreamers alike.
What makes our brand unique is that every design tells a story about the ocean, from coral-inspired patterns to marine wildlife artwork that reflects the beauty and fragility of our underwater world. We’re not just about creating stylish, high-quality hats and apparel—we’re about building a community that gives back.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
Without a doubt, my parents. They taught me the value of hard work, integrity, and following through on your commitments. Growing up, I watched them put their heart into everything they did, no matter how big or small. Including working several jobs in a day to creating their own businesses from just an idea. That example shaped how I approach both business and life—showing me that success isn’t about shortcuts, it’s about consistency, perseverance, and doing things the right way.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell myself to move faster with ideas and not let doubt get in the way. Looking back, I realize how many great opportunities start with just taking that first step. I’d remind my younger self that perfection isn’t the goal—momentum is. Trust your instincts, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to take risks when something feels right.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That fashion has to follow trends, stay neutral, or come with a high price tag. I think that’s a lie. Clothing should be about self-expression—bright, bold, and full of life. What you wear should make you feel something, not just fit in. At Wanderlust, we believe in color, creativity, and accessibility. Everyone should be able to express their personality and love for adventure through what they wear—without breaking the bank.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I didn’t come from a marine science background, and I never planned to work in clothing or design. The idea for Wanderlust Hats & Apparel started simply—I couldn’t find a fun, ocean-themed hat that really spoke to me. So, I created one myself. That small moment of creativity grew into a brand that brings together people who share a love for the ocean and a desire to protect it.
I hope people say that I saw a way to make a difference using what I had—a vision, a bit of creativity, and a deep connection to the sea. Wanderlust became my way of not only staying hands-on in conservation, but also building a community that gives back to it. If my story inspires others to protect what they love, in whatever way they can, then I’ve done something meaningful.
