Rising Stars: Meet Mary Kate Corbyons of Southwest Ranches

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Kate Corbyons.

Hi Mary Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
New Horizon Learning Center has been serving Southwest Ranches since 1989. We are a small, intimate Christian preschool. Our school currently has 52 friends attending. Because we are so small, we are able to offer something that a lot of preschools cannot, a small class size and a family focused atmosphere.

At New Horizon Learning Center we focus on learning through play. While children play, learning is fun and engaging.

We aim to provide a safe and secure loving environment to foster your child’s safety and wellbeing.

You child will always come home with something: sometimes it’s artwork in the backpack, sometimes it’s a fun story to share, and sometimes it’s a new skill to demonstrate… no matter what, they will bring something new home every day! Ask your child questions and listen to the answers, you will be blown away.

At New Horizon Learning Center we are delighted to bring your children a Christian education in addition to an academic one. Some of the ways we incorporate Jesus into our curriculum are:
-Daily Worship
-Weekly Chapel lead by one of our three pastors
-Weekly Bible verses and Bible stories incorporated into classroom learning
-Praying before each snack/meal

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like all educational institutions and places of worship, we have had our ebbs and flows. But the one thing that we can always count on is that God has our little school on His mind and we are blessed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have a degree in Psychology and Religion from FIU. I also have my directors credentials with a trauma endorsement from NSU. I am currently in the process of becoming a Resiliency Coach through the BCSB.

As the director of NHLC, I am in a unique position. I am able to form relationships with all the families, all the tiny humans and all the staff. It has been a huge blessing to my life. I often sit back and marvel at the fact that this is what I get to do for a living. I get to sing, dance and play my way through the day with the best kind of humans around (TINY ONES!)

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned a lot from these tiny humans. Take everything one step at a time. If something is hard, you have to keep trying. It’s ok to sit and cry sometimes, but you have to get back up. Big feelings are a part of life and it’s ok to be mad.
