Inspiring Conversations with Jennifer Love of Inch by Yard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Love.

Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In the past few years, caring for my garden had become therapeutic. It often felt like the only thing I could reliably control.

When I was unable to find work in publishing or marketing, I started over as a plant lady. I landed a gig in the shade house at Flamingo Road Nursery and later, Jesse Durko’s, where I was being mentored by the legendary plantsman himself until he passed away recently.

Blending my retail garden center and nursery experience, my wife and I launched Inch by Yard a year ago on a shoestring budget. We built an online nursery to “bring the garden store to your door.” And it’s starting to catch on.

Most people want a gorgeous garden but don’t know what to plant where and why. That’s where we come in. We source drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, iguana-resistant plants wholesale from local nurseries throughout South Florida and set our customers up for long term success. So having a gorgeous outdoor space is affordable, achievable and accessible to anyone.

And we’re not just building a business, we’re fostering a culture of fellow garden geeks. Proud plant parents text me photos when their babies are blooming and it makes my day. We’ll be launching our own garden club soon for locals to connect and share cuttings in person as well, so stay tuned.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a winding road. This is a new industry for us.

I was in publishing and my wife, non-profit management. So there’s been a learning curve. So far, we taught ourselves how to use two-person auger for a tree installation earlier this year. And a mini excavator for a dry well. That was actually a lot of fun!

Working outdoors in the summer is tough because you need to plan your day around the weather, stay hydrated and take extreme heat precautions. Sometimes my clients would worry I was going to pass out from heat stroke. The South Florida sun is no joke!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We’re not a traditional plant nursery— we source plants from trusted nursery partners throughout South Florida and deliver them straight to our customers.

My experience in retail plant sales helped me identify what was missing from the customer experience and put them together to offer our clients.

We built the Inch by Yard brand from the inspiration: “Inch by inch it’s a cinch. By the yard, it’s hard.” It reminds me that great things are possible if you’re willing to take small, consistent steps towards your goal.

What’s next?
We’re on a mission to install one million native plants and trees by the end of 2026. I have no idea how we’re going to get it done but it’s something that inspires me to work towards.

Once we become South Florida’s go-to source for plants, we’ll offer franchises around the world for people like us, looking to grow a better life for themselves and a greener future for the world.
