Exploring Life & Business with Job Brunat of Challenges Conquered Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Job Brunat.

Job Brunat

Hi Job, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Raised in Florida by Haitian immigrants—a mother who was a nurse and a father who was a social worker—I learned early that care is a calling and service is a promise. Their quiet courage and compassion became my compass, pointing me toward mental health at a time when conversations about emotions—especially for men—were too often kept quiet.

I began my career in human services at 17 with Kids In Distress, where I saw how consistent care can change a young person’s trajectory. I went on to earn a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), and gain national recognition as an NCC and CCMHC. My training opened doors, but conviction opened paths: I served with the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, supporting veterans, active-duty service members, and military families through trauma, PTSD, substance abuse, sexual and domestic violence, and crisis intervention. Along the way, I became a Credentialed Tier III Counselor for the U.S. Marine Corps—the highest designation for a mental health counselor within that branch.

Grounded by that experience, I built a home for healing in South Florida. As Owner, Clinical Director, and Primary Therapist at Challenges Conquered Counseling Services, I lead a practice of 10+ clinicians serving Fort Lauderdale and Broward County, with a second location in Jacksonville expanding access to culturally competent care for diverse and underserved communities. In my office, men find language for pain they were never taught to name; families rediscover safety and connection; and clients are met with dignity and practical tools to move forward.

My advocacy extends beyond the therapy room. As Vice President of Mindfully H.E.R. (Healing, Expressing, and Releasing), I champion women and families on their mental health journeys, and my community work has included Palm Beach State College, Kids In Distress, and the YMCA—spaces where prevention, education, and access can change trajectories.

The Haitian American Chamber of Commerce of Florida named me a Top 20 Under 40 Young Professional, recognizing the same qualities my parents modeled: humility, discipline, and a heart for people. Today, I remain a clear voice for men’s mental health and a trusted advocate for those too often left out of care—continuing the work that began at home and now reaches across my community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Two pivotal, challenging moments reshaped my path—2007 and 2022. I once planned to become a lawyer. I loved the idea of advocacy, structure, and using my voice to argue for what’s right. But even as I studied and mapped out that path, my heart kept pulling me toward mental health—the quieter kind of advocacy that happens in rooms where people feel safe enough to tell the truth. I wrestled with that tension for years, unsure whether my calling was the courtroom or the counseling room. In 2007, I took the LSAT and passed. As I began researching law schools, my work at Kids In Distress shifted everything. The impact of consistent, compassionate care changed my trajectory. I chose counseling and earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Florida Atlantic University in 2013, then served individuals and families with the U.S. Marine Corps, the Miami VA Hospital, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

In 2022, everything sharpened. I took the biggest hit of my life when my mother—the person who modeled compassion in action—died from cancer. Losing her broke me open and clarified me. The way she lived—steady, generous, and always oriented toward service—made my next step clear. I didn’t just want to help people one by one; I wanted to build something greater than myself, inspired by her legacy of organizing group mission trips and helping people in Haiti year after year. I stepped even deeper into mental health, carrying her example with me.

So I took a leap of faith. I opened my own practice and began building a team, inviting other therapists into a shared mission of culturally competent, heart-centered care, but also clinicians that specialize in other areas. Leading clinicians isn’t just about operations; it’s about mentoring, creating a space where providers feel supported, and ensuring clients are met with dignity and real tools for change. Every intake, every supervision meeting, every hard day we push through together reminds me why I made this shift: the work is deeply human, and it honors my mother’s legacy of helping others—one person, one session, one brave conversation at a time.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
My biggest professional risk was leaving a secure federal 9-to-5 to open a private practice. Walking away from stability isn’t something I took lightly, but even in graduate school I knew I wanted to serve my community more directly. I didn’t have a formal business background—just a strong clinical skill set and a clear mission—so there were moments that felt intimidating. Still, I believed in the value of what I could offer: culturally competent, heart-centered care and the ability to build a space where clients and clinicians could thrive. That conviction guided every step—learning operations, seeking mentors, and growing deliberately. The risk was real, but so was the reward of creating meaningful, local impact.
