An Inspired Chat with Patrice Porter of South Florida

Patrice Porter shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Patrice, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
Trusting. Lots of problems, simple and complex, can be broken down to the fear of trusting. Trusting God, trusting each other, and trusting ourselves. We come equipped with everything we need to navigate this life, but circumstances lead us to believe that we need defenses to protect ourselves. Embodying trust is the key to a successful life. One where we achieve happiness not by what we accomplish or obtain, but by the energy we give and receive. Trusting oneself leads to confidence; confidence leads to satisfaction. The struggle is that we tangle ourselves in a web of defenses when we really just need to admit that we’re afraid to trust.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Patrice Porter and my brand, Porter World, is meant to lead free souls to the new world. This new world is metaphorical, and we all have one waiting on us. My brand is for souls who have experienced a lifelong cycle of self-sabotage. Souls who have been taught that it’s better to abandon Self than to be seen loving themselves out loud because everything around them proved to them that they were not worthy. Today is a new day. My personal healing journey has lead me to a place of being comfortable taking a stand publicly for people like me who have been abused mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. I am here to spread confidence to stand up, reclaim your voice, and shine bright. Every day is a mission to demolish fear. I do this by speaking on social media, making music, and showing up for myself every day. I would like to take my brand further by collaborating with community efforts to aid abused women, single parents, beginning artists, and more. This year I threw an album release party for my album Patrice Porter and collaborated the proceeds from merch sales with Women in Distress who aid young children with school supplies as well as sustainability for abused women and children. I am interested in hosting or joining more events and growing my brand’s impact in the community.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My father. He always told me “if you help yourself a little bit, people will help you”. I didn’t understand this advice when I was younger- or his true message on the way I should handle a workload. Looking back on it, my dad always understood exactly who I was. He knew my temperament and what I could handle. He taught me how to look at things in a way that I could understand, which was to not power through, but take things one at a time. Create a system to make it easier on yourself. I resisted this advice because deep down I was afraid of success. It’s only now at 30 years old that I see the role success plays in life as a whole. Success helps you help others. It’s okay to be successful. That’s what I’ve learned about work from my father.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
“You’re doing great”. These days the kindest thing someone has said to me is that I am in the right place at the right time. This may not seem like kindness, but it gives me peace, and that is kind. My younger self needed grace that she didn’t always get, so if I could speak to her, this is what I would say.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The music industry lies to itself by telling itself that music is a business. This is strictly my opinion based on the truth of what music is, not really a suggestion on how the industry should be. Music is free. Literally, music represents freedom. Yet it is captured and exploited for power, money and positioning. It is turned into competition – who’s freedom sounds the best? Whose freedom can control the masses the most effectively? Whose freedom can we own? It’s sickening. I’d like to see a truly free world where we share our voices to heal each other the way they were meant to be used. That’s all I have to say about that.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
They will think I had it all figured out from the beginning. People often discredit the involvement of the divine in creating true legacy because nothing is created by one single effort.
