Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Badaro.
Hi Victor, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m originally from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, and I was born into a musical family. My parents had a band, my father a guitarist, and my mother a singer. At 10, I started learning guitar, and at 16, I started my first band at school. Soon after, I was playing in local bands as an instrumentalist, I’ve performed at major reggae and Brazilian music events. As a guitarist, I’ve also accompanied Andrew Tosh, son of reggae legend Peter Tosh, Mitchell Brunings, current lead singer of The Wailers, and Jamaican pianist Jaime Hinckson.
I began my career as a vocalist in 2011, alongside other work, and currently focus my energy on musical projects and productive partnerships. In 2020, I released the album “Abençoa,” which
features songs like “Energia Boa” and “Teu Sorriso,” and since then, I’ve been releasing singles like “Sou Filho de Salvador” and “Rocksteady,” which have been featured on numerous playlists and have over 50,000 plays on Spotify.
Reggae is its biggest influence, but styles like Blues, Jazz, World Music, Dancehall and Brazilian and African Music permeate the atmosphere of my musical work, which still brings elements of Afro-Bahian origins such as Capoeira and Samba Reggae.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I can say that this path is still a little difficult, but over time I have absorbed knowledge and have been improving myself as a music producer and expanding my horizons not only to be an artist on stage but also to work in other spheres of the music business.
The biggest challenge is financial: securing resources to finance musical and artistic projects in general. We often have to strive for the best results with limited resources, but somehow we manage to make them a reality.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a musician, singer, song writter and musical producer. In 2015, I was a finalist at Brazil’s largest university festival, Fun Music in São Paulo, with the song “Oh Girl.” In 2017, I also reached the finals of the Bahia Educadora Radio Music Festival with the instrumental “Sete da Manhã.” I was also a finalist at the Olodum band’s Femadum festival in 2013 and 2022. In 2024, I was selected for a music video project, and we recorded Maré Ta Cheia, a blend of Brazilian and Jamaican culture, with capoeira and a dancehall beat.
And that’s the focus right now: exploring the diaspora’s ancestral connections and communications, rhythms, and cultures. I was born in the Blackest city in Brazil, so all of this resonates with me.
How do you think about happiness?
Happiness is being able to live well, be with family and true friends, be able to enjoy the fruits of my labor with music, and be able to continue developing cool and interesting projects.
