Today we’d like to introduce you to Mylene Costa.
Hi Mylene, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My husband, Sérgio Costa, is a farmer, and together we have built our lives in agribusiness. I have always worked alongside him in this field, one that demands resilience, vision, and total dedication.
Yet, despite this solid foundation, there was a restlessness within me, a feeling of emptiness I could not ignore. It was in that space that art arrived as a blessing.
From then on, everything unfolded with intensity: I sought knowledge, explored materials, embraced challenges, and allowed myself to fail in order to grow. Along the way, I learned to balance motherhood, business life, and an artistic career. Each stage transformed me as much as it transformed my sculpture.
Today, I understand sculpture as a dialogue between body, time, and memory. More than a profession, it is the way I exist in the world — a continuous process of creation, resilience, and revelation.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has by no means been a smooth road. I began my artistic journey while already deeply involved in agribusiness and motherhood, which always required balancing multiple responsibilities. I faced the insecurity of starting in another field, the lack of time, the weight of self-criticism, and even prejudice in embracing myself as an artist at a more mature stage of life.
There were also many practical and financial challenges: sustaining a sculptural practice requires costly materials, complex processes, and technical structures that are not always accessible. On top of that, moving several times between different cities and countries meant constantly starting over, rebuilding networks and credibility in very different contexts.
For years, I participated in exhibitions but did not promote my work. The fear of not being taken seriously — and of facing prejudice — kept me silent, as if I had not yet earned the right to occupy that space. It was only when the awards began to arrive that I felt the external recognition that encouraged me to fully embrace my voice.
Each obstacle became part of my formation as an artist. I discovered that nothing in the creative path is stable or guaranteed — and that it is precisely the barriers, the constant changes, the long nights, and the frustrations that have shaped me. Today, I understand that my sculpture also emerges from these resistances: each piece carries within it both overcoming and revelation.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a contemporary sculptor, and I see my art as a gift from God — a gift to be shared through a poetics that reflects nature, the feminine, time, and space. I specialize in creating sculptures that explore the dialogue between permanence and transformation, hardness and softness, resilience and delicacy.
What I am most proud of is seeing my sculptures touch people and cross borders, reaching hearts around the world. That fills me with gratitude and pride.
What sets my work apart is how my sculptures embody tension: rigidity always asking for movement, and movement always carrying sensuality. They are not only forms, but living reflections of the feminine, of time, and of the eternal desire for transformation.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories are of playing in the earth, running barefoot, and swimming in the river — simple experiences of freedom and connection with nature that still shape me and influence my art.
