Exploring Life & Business with Gene Evans of Merit International School of Languages

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gene Evans.

Hi Gene, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2013, after living and working in London for many years, my business partner, Dr. Marta Garrido, and I returned to the US and settled in Boca Raton. Boca, a thriving, attractive and welcoming town, seemed to be the perfect location for establishing our language school, Merit International School of Languages – not too far from Broward, Miami and West Palm Beach.

Our school premises were located in East Boca, where we attracted students from around the world. They soon became part of our global family; we taught English, Spanish and other languages on site and also online. In addition, we taught business executives of local companies in Palm Beach and Broward County on both their premises and at our school’s location. Merit soon rose through the ranks to become the top language school in the area.

During the pandemic, like most businesses, we suffered the loss of people attending classes at the school. After our lease expired, we decided to offer the language classes online via Zoom. Our most popular languages courses are English, Business English, TOEFL Prep, Spanish, Italian, French, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, and Mandarin.

We continually strive to serve our students locally and globally online. Learning English, Spanish or another language, can open the world to learners – it’s the gift that keeps on giving. We are dedicated to helping our students meet their language goals.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were two major hurdles during the course of our run. First, we could not offer student visas because the school was established after the government deadline for language school applications. Secondly, the Covid pandemic put us in a position we could not have anticipated. Luckily, we were able to adapt to both situations and are still successfully teaching students to improve or learn the languages of their choice.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
