We recently had the chance to connect with Cassie (CeCe) Cunningham and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cassie (CeCe), thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
Many individuals experience significant challenges related to their mental health. In addition to personal life stressors, many people face unresolved concerns such as childhood trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and difficulties with self-esteem, among other issues. These concerns often go unaddressed, contributing to ongoing emotional and psychological distress.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Cassie Cunningham, but I go by CeCe. I am a freelance hairstylist with a true passion for hair and for helping women of all ages feel beautiful and confident. My love for cosmetology began at the age of 13, when I became fascinated with hair. During my teenage years, my aunt mentored me and taught me the fundamentals of hair care and styling.
I specialize in braids and plaits but also provide a variety of other hairstyles to meet the needs of my clients. I created the name Hairartistcece for my brand because I view hair as a form of art—whatever you pursue with passion is, in its own way, art. My goal is to ensure every client feels comfortable and receives the best possible hair experience. I take great pride in my work and the brand I’ve built.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
My father has been the greatest influence on my work ethic. As a self-contractor and long-time business owner, he instilled in me the values of hard work, ambition, and determination. Growing up, I admired how he never complained when challenges arose. Instead, he found new avenues to ensure ongoing success. His resilience and drive taught me to always be a go-getter, and I deeply admire him for shaping my outlook on work and life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been times when I felt discouraged and considered giving up when circumstances did not align with my expectations. Through these experiences, I have learned that life does not always unfold according to plan. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, and at times they can create barriers to success.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would likely say that what matters most to me is being truthful, remaining steadfast in my values, and staying true to myself, as everyone else is already taken.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, I have given my best on multiple occasions. In the past, I shared my work on social media platforms, and the number of likes or external validation did not always meet my expectations. While this used to bother me, I have since learned to recognize my own worth. I know that I consistently give my all to my clientele, and even if I do not receive praise from others, I can acknowledge and celebrate my own efforts. I view myself as my own competition and strive to continuously improve.
