An Inspired Chat with Raquel King of Delray Beach

Raquel King shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Raquel, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Does anyone remember the show, “Where in the world is Carmen San Diego?” THIS IS MY LIFE! As a full time flight attendant and boardgame creator, I travel pretty much everywhere. Sometimes I get lucky with amazing layovers and great crews, and other times I gaze into concrete parking lots, wonder why I can’t remember what city I’m in… HA! But lately, my favorite part of it all has been traveling to conventions (mostly boardgame and retro cons). It’s a new and exciting way for me to meet interesting people outside of the airplane.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Raquel and one of the creators of @TheSADgamez by It’s Not Sane LLC! Long story short, I got into games during covid when I was furloughed as a flight attendant a few years back. Games quickly became a way for me to deal with my own mental health struggles and anxieties. As I continued on my journey, I realized I really wanted to make nostalgic games that helped bring people together and build community, as well as connection and laughter. The Sad Music game may be my favorite of all the games we have so far. However, we are in the process of launching The Sad Movie game… and the response so far has been really great. So im excited to see where it goes!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
It’s hard to pick one singular moment that has really shaped how I see the world…. But I guess if i’m going to be broad about it, I would say that it’s loss in all its forms. Loss of a job, loss of a home, or the most earthshattering experience of losing someone you love. These are all things that will definitely change you. That being said, I’ve chosen to take my losses and turn them into art – its the only way I’ve survived.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Nothing in life comes easy. Anything worth attaining is hard work. Keep going, never give up and don’t lose hope. Creation is the key to salvation, so most importantly, DONT STOP MAKING THINGS!

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I have a bit of an infatuation with the director Kevin Smith. I know it sounds silly, but I just find him so humble and cool and down to earth! He has openly talked about his struggles, and yet he is still funny as hell! I love that he sold his comic book collection to get the money to pursue his dreams way back when (because he really believed in himself), and I think he’s just an all around really cool dude. I think we could all learn a thing or two about him because of his character.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people think that I was a creative person who tried hard to reach those who seemed unreachable…. I hope that they looked at me as the type of person who would root for the underdog, and do what they could to help those who needed it. I want them to think I was inspiring, but most importantly, I want them to say that I was kind.
