Rising Stars: Meet Marilia Pergola of Bay Harbor Islands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilia Pergola.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Lulu was given to me in 2012, when I was living in Bogotá, Colombia. Lulu started developing a skin allergy and after a long journey trying to find out what was causing this condition, we found out she was allergic to ingredients used in processed pet foods. Lulu was my inspiration to start a business for natural and unprocessed pet treats.

During a road-trip with our dogs, my friend and I came about the idea of expanding the business and take it to the next level.
We developed a line of artisanal, Natural Pet Treat , delicious snacks and treats that we are sure your dogs and cats will love.
Your “little-friend’s” happiness and health are our top priorities and that is why our products are made of fresh, natural ingredients only. No preservatives at all.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I had the support from friends and family, as well Lulu’s veterinarian, who reviewed all recipes. I don’t believe in smooth road, that is always challenges that we had to face, such as, understanding all documents and licenses needed to operate safely.
I remember a question from a neighbor that bought only once my products, when we were still in the sampling process, she asked if I have insurance, because people could be very bad with small business and they could not trust a home made pet treat. I was shocked, but at the same time she made me realize that the world and people can be tricky sometimes. We have insurance, but we never had any issues with our customers.
Launching a product that has a lot of competition was not easy, we had to stick with our values and concept to not lose sight of what we wanted to offer to our customers. it’s important to acknowledge the competitors and keep going. There are customers for all tastes, prices and preferences.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My professional career started 25 years ago in the hospitality business. I always liked to host and serve people and in the hospitality would be the best career to do it. This career gave me the opportunity to learn about different areas in this business. I had been to different roles, countries and companies during these years. I also had to learn different languages to be competitive in this industry. This career opened an opportunity to learn about different cultures, food, language and mostly important respect every one. Sometimes people use to say that a person or something is strange, but actually is different from what we are used to. This career made me opened my eyes, be open mind to learn and not judge.
I had to challenge myself many times and accept professional opportunities that made me move far from my family and my house and my comfort zone. It was not easy, but I do not regret. My family was always supportive and with the technology helps me to keep in constant contact with them.
If you want a different experience you need to challenge yourself.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the diversity in culture, food and languages. I feel close to home. Miami is a city for everyone.
it can be chaotic sometimes, so many people, tourists, the traffic got worse since 2020.
