Conversations with Rafael Felipe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Felipe.

Rafael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Ralph, the founder and creative director of Bailey’s Sweets and Events. I started this journey in 2017 as a self-taught baker and cake artist, with a passion for creating custom sweets that bring joy to others. From humble beginnings with custom cakes, I expanded my offerings to smaller desserts, full dessert tables, and eventually, full-service event planning. Through hard work, determination, and a willingness to learn every day, Bailey’s Sweets and Events has grown into a comprehensive event team that provides custom sweets, florals, and event planning services.

Throughout my journey, I’ve had the privilege of working with notable clients like Joe Jonas and corporate partners like Royal Caribbean Group, including destination weddings aboard cruise ships. What drives me is the passion for creating unique and special experiences for each event. I pour my heart and soul into every project, and I believe that when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work. Today, Bailey’s Sweets and Events is a reflection of my dedication, creativity, and commitment to excellence.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I think any business owner who claims otherwise is sugarcoating the reality. Running a business like Bailey’s Sweets and Events is incredibly challenging. I’ve had to wear multiple hats, from baker and decorator to floral designer and content creator, which can be overwhelming at times.

What’s even more demanding is balancing my business responsibilities with pursuing higher education and other professional commitments. I’ve juggled being a full-time college student, earning my associate’s, bachelor’s, and now working towards a master’s in Event Leadership. On top of that, I also teach dentistry as a college professor, which adds another layer of complexity to my schedule.

The reality is that owning a business means working 24/7, 365 days a year. There’s no downtime, and it takes a toll. But despite the struggles, I’m driven by my passion for what I do and my determination to succeed. I’m constantly pushing myself to excel in multiple areas, as a business owner, student, and educator. I could not be prouder of the progress I’ve made so far.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Bailey’s Sweets and Events, we specialize in creating unforgettable experiences for a wide range of events, from children’s birthdays to baby showers and weddings. Our team offers a comprehensive suite of services, including custom sweets, florals, and full-service event planning. Our cakes are truly the star of the show, and I take immense pride in perfecting every detail. But it’s not just about the sweets, our floral arrangements are designed to complement our desserts and add an extra touch of elegance to every event.

As a perfectionist, I’m dedicated to delivering exceptional quality in every aspect of our work. Whether it’s a custom cake, a floral arrangement, or meticulous event planning, we go above and beyond to ensure that every detail is meticulously executed. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our 5-star reviews, and we’re passionate about delivering memorable experiences that exceed our clients’ expectations. From concept to execution, we pour our hearts and souls into every event, making sure that every guest has an unforgettable experience.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memories are the ones I spent growing up with my grandparents. One of my most treasured memories is sitting on top of the kitchen counter, helping my Abuela Basilia whip up delicious treats like flan, chocolate ice cream, and dulce de leche, the sweet, caramelized goodness of which would fill the entire kitchen with its irresistible aroma. Those moments were more than just about baking, they were about bonding, learning, and creating memories that have stayed with me to this day.

As I grew older and started Bailey’s, my Abuela’s influence remained a constant source of inspiration. She’d even help me with small details and we’d spend time together in the kitchen, which meant the world to me. Although she passed away in 2022, her legacy lives on in the love and passion I put into every sweet treat I create. I’m grateful for the time we had together and the lessons she taught me, both in and out of the kitchen.
