Life & Work with Vinni Hamilton of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vinni Hamilton.

Hi Vinni, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been involved with music for most of my life. I was born in London and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, from the age of 5. I got my start in Kingston, singing with my elementary school and pattucipating in national music competitions. I was fortunate enough to be awarded a scholarship to participate in a brass program at the Jamaica School of Music (now Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts) at the age of 10. I continued studying there for a year after.

In my early high school years, I joined the JROTC program at my high school and learned how to play the snare drum there. I also sang on my high school choir for my entire career. But I didn’t discover my passion for keyboards, songwriting and production until years later, through work with various local bands and choirs in and around Kingston.

As I transitioned into my university studies, I continued working with singing groups and choirs. I also started teaching myself to play the flute and joined an ensemble playing that instrument.

Upon graduating, I joined a christian rock band in Jamaica called The Few, recording and performing with them. I also began working professionally as an accompanist in churches, first as a drummer, then eventually as a keyboardist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. However, I believe the obstacles I encountered in my musical journey have helped me become a better musician and teacher.

For one thing, I had to learn time management quickly. It isn’t easy studying music outside of school while managing homework, chores, etc. I also learned resilience. My parents, though supportive of me learning music, were reluctant to accept my career choice as a musician and educator. The prevailing thought seemed to be that a career in music wasn’t a viable option.

I also struggled to grow musically. As I matured, I found that I had to learn many music concepts by teaching myself. This is before the age of the internet, with all these YouTube videos we have today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m self-taught as a drummer, keyboardist and flautist. I am particularly proud of my ear and ability to learn and retain music.

In my mind, what sets me apart is my discipline. I may not be the most talented musician but I work hard. I am willing to put in the work necessary to learn what I need to know to perform to the best of my ability.

As a keyboardist, I have played for many different artists, including Burning Spear (who I’m currently on tour with), Bob Andy, King Yellowman, Freddie McGregor, Diana King, Julian Marley, Jo Mersa Marley, Gramps Morgan, Alison Hinds, Etana, Nadine Sutherland, Luciano, Ernie Smith, Pluto Shervington, Tanya Stephens, Singing Melody, Da’Ville, Everton Blender, L..U.S.T., Lutan Fyah and Willie Stewart and friends.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love working with emerging artists, ones who have a like-minded passion and work ethic. Songwriting is a passion of mine and I love to collaborate. If there are singer-songwriters out there who need a musical collaborator, feel free to send me a message.
