We’re looking forward to introducing you to Randall Koch. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Randall, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Who are you learning from right now?
All my students and clients I teach and train on a daily basis. Every time one of them has a unique question or a technical mistake that needs to be corrected, it forces me to figure out the correct answer or solution to the problem which makes me a better and more experienced instructor.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the owner and lead instructor of Krav Maga Worldwide in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My training center focuses on reality-based self-defense training.
Krav Maga is the official hand-to-hand combat system of the Israel Defense Forces. It’s not a martial art but a defensive tactics system. We train a lot of “martial” but not a lot of “art”.
This system is for those who want to learn how to protect themselves as quickly as possible by focusing on practical life saving skills such as survival mindset, situational awareness, de-escalation, and fighting back techniques. We avoid the formalities of many martial arts such as wearing traditional uniforms, bowing, learning prearranged forms or patterns, etc. which allows a more practical and efficient use of students’ training time.
The goal of the instructors at our training center is to get students to be more confident, safe, and physical fit through functional self-defense, fighting and fitness training.
I currently have belt rankings in five different martial arts or systems, three of those being black belts. From this background I only teach the concepts and techniques that I believe will work in a real-life violent confrontation.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bonds between people is not doing what you say and saying what you mean. The best way that restores that is to acknowledge when you make a mistake, apologize for it, and offer a solution that attempts to fix the issue.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, many times I have considered quitting what I do for a living when things have got tough. But I told myself “this too will pass” and it always did.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, it is. But the public gets to view only a portion of who I am. I’m a very private person and there are aspects of me that I keep to myself and my close circle of friends.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I wouldn’t change much. If anything I would work harder with what I’m already doing knowing that I have a limited amount of time to accomplish my life goals.
