Mariela Mastrangelo shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mariela , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I am a television and audiovisual producer, and what I have noticed on many occasions is that people who don’t know the details of my profession assume that it is an easy job, that it is always fun, and that anyone can do it. In fact, when I have been working from home—whether on a call, on my computer, or simply using my phone (which is a work tool)—the people I live with often think I’m doing nothing. Many times, working in production is quite demanding, with no fixed hours or real disconnect. And yet, it is what I enjoy most in life: my profession.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’ve been in TV and audiovisual production for over 30 years, and I run my own production company called Kontrol Productions. Basically, I create and bring to life all kinds of content, from TV shows to digital projects. What makes it special is that I’m involved in every step, making sure the ideas we dream up actually happen—and look amazing.
Right now, I’m focused on projects that tell stories in fresh, original ways, and I’m always looking for new opportunities to grow my company and push creative boundaries.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I have worked for the most important Spanish-language television networks in the United States, but I always dreamed of having my own production company and being independent. It’s something that is very challenging, but I kept trying, presenting ideas and shows that were rejected—until one of them was finally accepted. My concept, execution, and production of the show captivated the people in charge and decision-makers at the network, and eventually, my own project aired on a television channel in both the United States and Latin America.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Yes, my brother always listened to me, trusted my abilities as a professional, and encouraged me to take action and believe in myself. One day, he heard me on a radio show talking about movies and cinema in general, and he told me that I should pursue it professionally. The following year, the opportunity came to me by chance, and even though he was no longer with me—he had passed away at 48 in an accident—I accepted it almost without thinking. His voice was the first thing I remembered when I made the decision.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
One of the things I’m proud of about my personality is exactly how transparent I am. I find it really hard to hide, pretend, or act like… While it’s something I really like about myself, I have to admit it has gotten me into trouble more than once, LOL.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was a good person, that I never hurt anyone on purpose, and that I truly enjoyed my profession.
