Joshua Smith of Miami-Dale county on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Joshua Smith shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Joshua , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Absolutely! One moment that really made me both laugh and feel proud happened during a recent wellness event we hosted for a local university. We had a mascot from one of our previous events, the Orange Blossom Classic, show up unexpectedly and start dancing low, like real low, with these exaggerated, bendy moves. Everyone started cheering, and someone joked, “That’s what happens after one of Joshua’s massages!” It was a lighthearted moment, but it hit me: people truly feel the difference our work makes.

It made me proud because it confirmed that what we’re doing at Mind Over Matter Allied Health isn’t just about massage, it’s about movement, community, and creating joyful, stress-free environments. Seeing people laugh, connect, and physically feel better, that’s the mission in action. We’re not just a wellness company; we’re changing how people relate to their bodies and their well-being, one touch at a time.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Of course! My name is Joshua Smith, and I’m the founder of Mind Over Matter Allied Health, LLC, a mobile wellness company based in South Florida. Since 2019, I’ve been dedicated to improving lives through therapeutic massage, physical wellness education, and community-based healing. What started as a solo mission to bring relief and recovery to people in my hometown has now grown into a dynamic wellness team that partners with corporations, universities, athletic programs, and community organizations.

We specialize in providing on-site services: everything from chair massages at wellness days and sports recovery sessions to custom workshops focused on posture, stretching, and injury prevention. At our core, we believe wellness should be proactive, personalized, and accessible to everyone, whether you’re a high-performing professional, a student athlete, or a busy mom just trying to stay balanced.

I’m also proud to be involved in civic engagement through programs like the Orange Bowl Ambassador Committee, mentoring youth through internships, and working with underserved communities to bring healing where it’s needed most. For me, this work isn’t just business, it’s purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that most shaped how I see myself is the one I had with my grandmother. She was the heart of our family. She was resilient, nurturing, deeply rooted in faith and service. Watching her care for others, even when she didn’t have much herself, taught me the value of presence, compassion, and doing meaningful work that leaves people better than you found them.

Her strength shaped the foundation of who I am today. When I started Mind Over Matter Allied Health, I didn’t just want to create a business, I wanted to build something that could touch lives the way she touched ours. Her selflessness, warmth, and no-excuses attitude still echo in how I serve my clients, lead my team, and show up in the community.

Even now, when things get overwhelming, I hear her voice reminding me that healing isn’t just physical, it’s emotional and spiritual too. That perspective fuels everything I do and is the reason I approach wellness as a full-circle experience: mind, body, and soul.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No because of my FAITH in The Holy Trinity. One of the most defining moments came early on in my journey with Mind Over Matter Allied Health, LLC. I had just returned to Miami after a sports massage internship in Arizona, full of passion but with no clients, no consistent income, and very little support.

There was one night in particular, I had just finished a massage for someone who didn’t even end up paying me. I sat in my car, exhausted, questioning whether I should go back to a “safe” job or give this dream one more shot. But something inside told me to keep going. I remembered why I started: to create healing spaces for people who don’t always have access to them, and to turn my pain into purpose.

That decision, to bet on myself, was the turning point. Word-of-mouth started to spread, and my mission began to align with opportunity. Looking back now, I’m grateful I didn’t give up. That low moment became the root of something much greater.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One belief I hold firmly, and will continue to act on no matter how long it takes-is that wellness should be accessible, not exclusive. I’m committed to building a culture where physical and mental health services aren’t seen as luxuries, but necessities, especially in underserved communities.

That’s why I’m deeply invested in creating and expanding mobile wellness programs for schools, municipalities, and community centers. Whether it’s chair massages for overworked teachers, sports recovery for student athletes, or stretching workshops for seniors, I believe healing should come to you, no matter your zip code or income level.

This mission isn’t just about services; it’s about shifting the mindset around self-care. Through Mind Over Matter Allied Health, I want to normalize wellness in everyday life, through education, access, and consistency. It’s a long game, but I’m here for it.

I’m currently laying the groundwork to scale this vision nationally, through partnerships, funding, and creating jobs for other wellness professionals. Even if it takes years, I’m committed to making wellness a way of life for every community we touch.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I showed up with purpose, with heart, and with healing hands. That I didn’t just build a business, but a movement that brought wellness into people’s lives in ways that felt personal, accessible, and lasting.

I want the story to be that I turned struggle into service. That even when life tested me, I stayed grounded in my mission, to make people feel seen, heard, and better in their own bodies. That I created opportunities not just for myself, but for others to grow, heal, and succeed, especially those who come from where I come from.

I hope they say I was someone who made wellness feel like home, who gave back more than he took, and left communities stronger, more connected, and more at peace than he found them.
