Tiana Henry shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Tiana, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Doing what I love! Hair! I could be having that toughest morning and as soon as I get in the shop and lost in my work, I forget whatever happened before getting there!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey there! I am 33 year old, Tiana Henry, the owner of Tresses In Vogue hair salon for ten years and I couldn’t imagine life any other way. I am a mother of two boys (2yo/4yo) who rule my world. I also sing and write music. I decorate Christmas trees during the holidays as an enjoyable hobby! I’m the curator of the Conscious Minds Event which is a mental health awareness event infused with the arts. We also host local vendors for community exposure. I keep God as the center of all he’s allowed for me to share with the world through my many talents. In my salon, hair care and education is a must. Each client has to leave well informed on their hair journey with me. As a salon suite owner, I often redecorate to show my clients that they invest in the business through their consistent support over the years. I have been working on writing music and recording in the studio as a well as being more intentional with my business through marketing, image and ensuring they have a warm and welcoming environment!
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My mentors! In their own way from school all the way through to current years! I’d get in trouble for naming them because there’s so many but I must say that Dwayne Dillon of Dillon’s Image barbershop, Bryan McCray of Bryanmichaelstudios, Samantha Porter of Integrity Financial Group and my hair school teacher Mrs. Lori Keels, to name a few have been the catalyst I didn’t know my life needed. Their guidance, knowledge, experience and support has always been the driving force to who I am today. I couldn’t be more grateful for my core support team!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! A few times actually. More than a few lol. One particular time was when a clients mother wasn’t happy with her color service. After proper steps and information I didn’t want to challenge the integrity of her hair so I stopped and wanted to regroup the next day. What happened at my salon was interjected by what was done at her home so it seemed as though I didn’t know what I was doing. I was then called about it and it wasn’t a nice call. After that I felt so defeated because I had a back plan I wasn’t able to execute and now felt that this would ruin my reputation. I called Mrs Keels crying and told her I’d never do hair another day and she said “Sweetie these days happen but remember the days where your clients were very happy! Have you seen your work! You can’t give up now! Take it as a lesson and apply what you could do differently next time!” I took a deep breath and here I am ten years in and so glad I didn’t give up!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They’d say my children and my business matters most. Everything that I do revolves around the effects it will have on them and my business is the main source of how I can give them the life they deserve!
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Behind the salon chair and behind the mic! Two places where I’m in another world!
