We’re looking forward to introducing you to Gil Breef. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Gil, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I start my day at 5 a.m. because I value having quiet, focused time before the day begins. I drink water with lemon and take a few minutes to meditate, which helps me clear my mind and set a positive tone for the day. After that, I go for a 30-minute run to energize myself and maintain my fitness. By the time I return, my toddler son is waking up, and I spend about 15 minutes with him before continuing with my routine. I then take a shower and prepare my meals for the day, as I follow a clean, homemade diet due to specific dietary needs. Before leaving for work, my son and I take a moment to pray together. This structured routine allows me to start each day grounded, organized, and ready to perform at my best.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Gil, and I’m the founder of Shades By Design, a company specializing in custom residential and commercial window coverings and outdoor shading systems. What makes our brand unique is our ability to blend functionality, design, and innovation to create tailored solutions that elevate our clients’ spaces — whether it’s a high-end residence, a luxury hotel, or a large commercial project.
Our journey started with a passion for design and a desire to deliver exceptional service, and over the years, we’ve been fortunate to grow into a trusted name in our industry. Being recognized on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America for three consecutive years is something we’re incredibly proud of, as it reflects the hard work of our team and the trust our clients place in us.
Right now, we’re continuing to expand our outdoor division and investing in technology and processes to make our client experience even more seamless, from concept to installation. At the heart of it, our mission remains simple: to deliver high-quality, customized solutions while building lasting relationships with every client we serve.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that truly shaped how I see the world was when I became a father. Holding my son for the first time shifted my perspective in an instant — it made me more mindful, patient, and intentional in everything I do. It reminded me that success isn’t just about building a business or achieving personal goals, but also about creating balance, being present, and building something meaningful for the people who matter most.
That experience taught me the importance of gratitude and resilience. It changed the way I lead my team and run my business — I now place even more value on empathy, clear communication, and creating an environment where people feel supported and inspired to grow.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: “Trust the process and be patient with yourself.” I’d remind myself that challenges and setbacks aren’t signs of failure, but stepping stones that teach resilience and shape the person you’re becoming. I’d tell my younger self to stay focused, keep learning, and not be afraid to take calculated risks — because the growth and success that come from perseverance are worth every obstacle along the way.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
One foundational truth in my life is that discipline and gratitude create freedom. I’ve learned that being consistent — whether in my health, my work, or my relationships — builds a foundation that allows me to handle challenges with clarity and resilience.
Another truth I hold close is that kindness and integrity are non-negotiable. I believe in treating people with respect, whether it’s my team, clients, or family, because the way we show up for others says more about us than anything else.
And finally, I deeply believe that faith and family are my anchor. They remind me of what truly matters, keep me grounded during busy seasons, and guide the way I make decisions in both life and business.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I only had 10 years left, I would immediately stop overextending myself on things that don’t truly matter. I’d stop saying yes to every demand on my time that doesn’t align with my values or my purpose.
Instead, I’d focus even more on creating meaningful memories with my family, especially my son, and on pouring my energy into the people and projects that bring genuine fulfillment. I’d also stop second-guessing myself — I’d take more bold steps, personally and professionally, knowing that time is too precious to waste on fear or hesitation.
