Scotch Wonder shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Scotch, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
My whole life I felt like I didn’t belong, as if I was some aberrant to Planet Earth. But whenever I make music, it feels as if everything is aligned. I say that to say I’ve always felt directionless, but some unforeseen force keep redirecting me to making music about my personal struggles, whether depression, addiction or even relationship problems. So I wholeheartedly believe that is my path. It’s been quite a journey going from underground soundcloud rapper from Miami, to complete musician with control and input on every part of the process, from production to engineering. I never felt I was good at anything, but it turns out I’m actually amazing at this! I hope the world loves the music I give to it, as much as I love the people I give it love it return.
With your best interest heart,
Marigold Scotch Wonder
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Scotch Wonder, and I’m working to become the best Punk Rock, Grunge, and Hip Hop artist of our time. All my spare time (and sometimes work time) goes into creating music. Everything is still under Miami New Wave Sound & Design (MNWSD). MNWSD is still functioning despite us not posting on Instagram in a while, but it’s different now. We collaborate with artists who share our hunger for good music.
I have four projects out, all high quality, but I’m most excited for this next one: my true debut, Young Hot American Asshole.
A lot of regular people are being pushed to the fringe of society and don’t know how to deal with it. But I’ve been to the fringe and back a couple of times, and those are the types of people who keep the world spinning, in a sense. They add culture. I feel like American society is dying, but too many people have a stake in the game and won’t admit it. Young Hot American Asshole is the type of art from a dead society that will survive after it’s gone, because it offers a unique perspective.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Jo Huncho. I used to think people didn’t care about what joe six pack , the All-American, everyday blue collar, came up from the mud, ex-football/basketball player, rapper/folk/rock music making, black person had to say . But then I realized that Hip Hop, Country Music, and Rock are popular because people want to hear from others like them—it’s relatable. Jo convinced me that people would want to hear my music ( and to clean up my image lol). There’s a lot of music people wouldn’t have heard if it weren’t for Jo pushing me to get it out. And now, those are my favorite songs.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You’re good enough just the way you are.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
To get little Black boys and girls to know they are not lesser than. I heard Nina Simone say it, and Kanye West do it. So the next natural step is to tell people where I got the inspiration from and how it worked in my life. Everything positive you see about me is because of the pro-Black aspects of artists like that (Michael Jackson, Ludacris) make me want to push that message forward in the most positive and creative way possible.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People may hear the lyrics and think of me as superficial, unserious, or perhaps a typical rapper.
And I’m not downing other artists; I’m happy for everyone who makes it.
I just have a lot of pent-up energy, thoughts, and emotions that I want to express in a way that I find funny and entertaining, with the hope of actually entertaining the audience that gravitates to it. I approach the songs with the audience in mind, so I want them to know that a lot of thought was put into it, but also make it an enjoyable 2-3 minutes that they spend listening to it.
