Sean Patrick shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Sean , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
A recent moment that made me feel proud would have to be receiving a gold plaque for one of my records. It’s a song titled ‘Nice Gets You Nowhere’ and has without doubt been my biggest record to date. It was a huge milestone for myself as an independent artist and felt great to celebrate that with people I care about.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sean Patrick, SP for short. I’m an artist, musician, performer out of South Florida. I built my career on my own. I chose not to sign to a major thus far despite the logistic issues that come with that. I base a lot of my music around times In my life and memories I want to capture. The song I had mentioned ‘Nice Gets You Nowhere’ was the single proceeding my latest solo EP ‘Remember Me However You Already Do’ and we followed that up with a short film we just released titled ‘Farewell My Love’ I’m equally proud of those two projects and really wanted to give them the proper time to be digested by the listeners and viewers. I’m really thankful for all the support I’ve received over these years and look forward to giving people more moments to enjoy and connect with as I’m settling into the next chapter of this journey I’m on.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I think I was a really optimistic happy kid that really enjoyed being creative. I’ve always tried to hold on to the essence of that regardless of how hard the world around you might make you feel like you can’t. Sometimes I think about how if the pressures from society and how it kind of proactively forces you base your life and schedule around certain expectations, making money and paying bills didn’t exist how many young creatives we’d have become something special. Like a lot of us just don’t have the tools to be what we ultimately want to be so there’s a lot of settling into a version of life that feels more statistic and boxed in.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Some of the hardest things for me to deal with in life have definitely been betrayal from people I believed a great deal in. Think I’ve experienced a lot of resentment and disregard from certain individuals when their own personal life got heavy and they decided to take it out on me in one way or another. How this affected the bigger picture in relation to what I’ve been building with music and my career is ultimately feeling unappreciated and alone in this kind of crazy turning point in life where I’ve seen a lot of success and accomplished a lot on my own but could’ve really use some help in certain areas where I feel the individuals that could’ve stepped up dropped the ball.
I know I move with pure intentions and have always shown a lot of love to people. Connecting with individuals who do the same has been something that really helped me move forward.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie that’s coming to light in my industry is an independent being incapable of success. Think myself among other great artists have really started to shift that narrative. There’s always the feeling of being in this up hill battle and I would be very open to setting up a mutually beneficial arrangement with one of these labels. But we’ll just have to see if that’s something that’ll happen. Nonetheless I’ve still managed to have some incredible music and visual releases that I’m very proud of. My single – ‘Nice Gets You Nowhere (feat. Rick Ross)’ going gold was just the highest peak of that so far. The overall response is wonderful. I have a few execs over at certain management companies that are certain I won’t make it… but that makes the success even more meaningful to me.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m creating something. I like writing honesty because it’s like a cleansing experience for me. Sometimes I will sit on a song for a minute because I will wait to experience something that inspires me. Then there are times where I don’t write at all, I will just come up with a verse while I am driving and record it into my phone.
The creative process for the short film we just released was one of my favorite things I’ve ever done. ‘Farewell My Love’ felt like a perfect way to end a chapter in my life for music. I’m really thankful for everyone that was involved in the making of it and believe the message the film and soundtrack conveys is one of my best.
