We recently had the chance to connect with Trevor Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Trevor , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Besides photography, I find a lot of joy being outside, and I’ve been spending a lot of time gardening! Attempting to grow your own fruits and veggies, or even just flowers can give you an appreciation for life on a different level. You’re cultivating an environment to allow your plants to grow and thrive, you learn what food the plants need, how much sun and water they might need, among other factors that allow for your plants to succeed.
It’s a joy for me to watch my plants go from small bushes, to fruit bearing trees that I can eat and share with others. Stepping outside and being able to watch my plants flourish in the Florida sun, watching and understanding that they will not grown in a day, instead through time and effort, they will!
It’s a constant reminder for my business as well; I must also remember to take my time, not every month will be a good month, there will be days where I may not see growth, however through patience and hard work I will also be able to thrive with my passions!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Trevor Jones, I am south Florida photographer based in Fort Lauderdale, I specialize in swimwear and fashion photography. I was born and raised in the Virgin Islands where I called Tortola home for the first 20 years of my life.
During that time I had gained a passion for photography and film making, specifically with surfing. My sister and I would spend month and month filming editing and watching these mini surf movies that we would create all from scratch. We learned to color grade, the importance of having a vision when setting out for the day, and how much fun you can really have in front and behind the camera.
After moving to Florida in the summer of 2016, I soon found myself working at BC Surf & Sport, where I would later become the social media manager. This is where I truly found my passion for photography alone. Every shoot I had a vision, seeing the clothing and swimwear I had seen in ad through magazines growing up, I felt as if I was working for the brands while making content for the store. That same passion I had making surf movies, translated directly into photography, instead of stitching clips together, I was using still images to tell the story.
The development of T. Jones Photo was really pushed from those around me. Those who saw that I wasn’t only passionate about what I was doing but I was doing a good job as well! I had a vision for the shoots, I knew what I wanted to achieve and who I wanted to achieve it with, I was urged to take the next step.
Where I feel I see the most success is where I’m really able to connect with my clients during a photoshoot; before we even starting shooting, I want to make them feel as comfortable as possible with me before they’r behind the camera. Once we start shooting, I’m the biggest hype man! I get a true feeling of glee seeing a client smile while we scroll through images on the camera, watching them see their vision come to life, there aren’t many more things I find more rewarding.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about easily my father. He showed me that hard work is what makes the world go round. It’s way easier to be lazy, but the reward in working hard to complete a task of project be even more rewarding.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of failure or rejection is defiantly my biggest fear and what holds me back the most. When people say ” The worst the could say is no” doesn’t make me feel any less anxious. I struggle with stepping outside my zone of comfort, new challenges and change in general.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I try to be my most authentic self at all times. I can be loud and boisterous at times, and I know when to dial it back. I also have a side to me that cares for others, whether I know you or not. I try not to make too many assumptions as I would want others to view me the same. For a long time now I’ve lived my life by the principals of treating other how I would want to be treated.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I only had 10 years left the thing I’d stop doing the most is fearing tomorrow. With only a certain amount of time, I’d go full on with my life in all aspects.
