Alejandra Colmenares’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We recently had the chance to connect with Alejandra Colmenares and have shared our conversation below.

Alejandra , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Haha, picture this: I’m basically on-call 24/7 as the Chief Entertainment Officer for my 17-month-old ball of energy. My days are a mix of baby snuggles, food negotiations, spontaneous dance parties, and chasing tiny feet everywhere—while also finding time to run Lunam.

It’s less of a rigid schedule and more like a beautiful, free-flowing choose-your-own-adventure story, except the baby is the author. ❤️

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Alejandra Colmenares, co-founder and CEO of Lunam, but at heart I’m someone who has always been searching for healthier, more conscious ways to live. I created Lunam out of both frustration and hope, frustration with the toxic, wasteful products that dominate the menstrual care industry, and hope that we could create something better for people and for the planet.

What makes Lunam different is that it’s not just about period underwear, it’s about rethinking menstrual care altogether. Our mission is to create products that are eco-friendly, toxic-free, and truly comfortable, while also standing for something bigger: dignity, sustainability, and women’s empowerment.

Before Lunam, I spent over a decade in e-commerce and sustainability, which gave me the tools to build a brand but also the awareness that health and the environment can’t be afterthoughts, they have to come first. That’s why Lunam is more than a product; it’s a movement. Right now, we’re working on expanding access to safer period care, growing our community, and sparking the kinds of conversations that make people feel seen and supported.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
What breaks the bonds between people?
Not listening. Holding grudges. Letting small hurts pile up. Avoiding the hard conversations. Losing trust. Forgetting to see each other with compassion.

What restores them?
Honest talk. Real apologies. Listening with an open heart. Small acts of care. Forgiveness. Choosing to understand each other, even when it’s hard. Remembering why we matter to each other.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
As a human, I’ve noticed some wounds hold me back and keep my heart from opening fully to the world’s adventures. I’ve realized that relationships are like mirrors, showing me the parts of myself that need more love and care. Through meditation, the Gene Keys, and deep contemplation, I don’t feel like I’ve “healed” these wounds in the sense of erasing them, but I’ve healed my relationship with them. I’ve learned to give them space to exist without pushing them away or avoiding them.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That “Sustainable” always means ethical, even though many brands greenwash and underpay workers.

Period care is only a personal responsibility, ignoring issues like period poverty and unfair taxes.

Comfort and safety are luxuries, not rights, justifying high prices or harmful materials.

One product can “fix” it all, instead of addressing education, access, and policy change.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I have days of steady meditation practice, everything just comes and goes without me getting caught up in it. I find I can respond to life in a much kinder and beautiful way, while still allowing myself to truly feel it all.
