Brett Chiavari shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Brett , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that is bringing me joy lately has to be my family. My wife and I recently welcomed our newest addition Quinn who is 7 months today, on August 3. I have a 6 year old daughter, my wife has a 14 year old son. So with Quinn we have the glue that is bringing both families together. We have gotten do to so much with her, so much with our family, it has been an absolute blast, and an adventure this year.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Brett Chiavari, and I’m the owner of BC Tacos food truck. BC Tacos is one of the longest tenured food trucks in S Florida, as I celebrated 14 years of business in May. I specialize in serving some of the best gourmet, American style tacos around. My speciality is catering. I do a lot of corporate events, private parties, house parties, which is the bulk of my business. You can also find me on the road slinging tacos out to the public a few times a month as well.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
I would have to say my dad. He has the best work ethic and is easily the hardest working person I know. At 67 he still strives to be better than he was the day before and he’s always pushing himself. He’s been an executive chef for 40 years and he’s done it all. He’s worked in NYC, he’s owned his own catering company, he’s worked on South Beach, been written about and published more times than I can count. The last 25 years he’s been working at country clubs. And still to this day, he’s reading, researching new dishes, new ways to do things. He’s never been stuck in his ways and continues to evolve and push himself to be the best chef/version of himself he can be.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think suffering, or on the brink of failure, always teaches you about your situation. I’ve been taught many lessons. Such as never thinking “you’re in a good spot,” in business. Once you take your foot off the pedal and start to coast, that’s where things can go wrong. Another lesson is to always keep looking for ways to push your business forward. I learned recently I’m never too old, or been in business long enough, to make cold calls to past clients, email potential new clients and introduce myself. Always keep the hustle going.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I absolutely believe the public me is the real me. I am outgoing and social (even though I normally claim to not be). I’m a family man, which I make very clear and wear my DAD title proud (with my assortments of hats and shirts). I love to have fun, which I thinks comes across in my personal social media, but as well as my business social media. Relationships are very important to me, and my longest tenured customers can attest to that, where I’m always genuinely happy to see them, I remember names, orders, ask about family members, and with me, its truly genuine.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe this is what I was born to do. Is it what I was born to do forever? I’m still on the fence about it. I do believe in life there’s things, people, opportunities, that come into your life and set you up for what is next. Whether that is a relationship, or job. I have put my heart, my soul, my mind, blood, sweat and tears into this business, this food truck. I have had the one truck. I was able to grow that to two restaurants, two food trucks and an outpost at a football stadium and concert venue. And here I am, back to one food truck (by choice) wondering if I’m being set up for my next venture…
