An Inspired Chat with Elizabeth Nickerson Hill

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Elizabeth Nickerson Hill. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Elizabeth, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, what is bringing me joy lately is my family, especially my two-year-old son. Lucas. His laugh is my constant source of joy. All the challenges and pressures of the day just seem to disappear when I am with him. He is such a funny, happy and active little guy. Building my family has been the most important thing to me, and I am so excited to watch him grow.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m incredibly lucky to be working for the American Heart Association, where I focus on reaching diverse communities by developing emerging media strategies, especially Spanish speaking audiences. The media landscape is constantly shifting, so it’s exciting to find new ways to connect with people beyond traditional communication.
A core part of my personal brand and my purpose is to be a force for good. I find it critical to cultivate deep connections and use my skills to elevate others. This is why mentorship is so important to me. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with and support a team of directors at the American Heart Association, helping them reach their goals and grow professionally in reaching diverse audiences.
Beyond my day job, I’m also the incoming president of the Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) Miami chapter. This is a duty I don’t take for granted, it’s a privilege to dedicate my time and energy to helping other professionals grow. I’m passionate about continuous learning and building strong programming for Miami’s communications community.
As the communications landscape evolves, it’s vital to have unique voices and fresh perspectives guiding the way. I believe we’re entering a very exciting new phase, and I’m right where I need to be in my career, working with mission-driven organizations that align with my values. We’re currently looking for leaders to join our 2026 board, so if you’re a communications professional with a passion for helping others, we’d love for you to get involved.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
When I think about who taught me the most about work, I immediately think of my father. He’s been an incredible mentor and a constant source of support. Seeing his work ethic firsthand was an education in itself. But more than that, he instilled in me the importance of resilience and self-worth. He always says that no matter how difficult things get, it’s essential to pat yourself on the back and be your own biggest cheerleader. That lesson has been a powerful guide for me both in life and in my career.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, I would tell her to give herself grace. It’s important to go through different life lessons to get where you want to be in life. The journey never looks like you imagine, but it will be better than you could have ever hoped for. Our paths are meant to prepare us for the future, and every experience, good or bad, serves a purpose in shaping us into who we are meant to become.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I am lucky to have a fantastic support system, but the person whose ideas I rely on the most other than my own is my husband, Robert. He is a true pillar of integrity and wisdom. When things get tough or facing a difficult decision, I can always lean on him. His advice is invaluable, and perspective provides me with clarity.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I were to retire tomorrow, I believe the people I work with and the communities I serve would most miss my unwavering support and my collaborative spirit.

I’ve always aimed to be someone who brings people together, elevates their work and helps them see their own worth. I’ve focused on cultivating deep connections and mentoring the next generation of communicators, especially through my work at the American Heart Association and the PRSA Miami chapter.

I hope people would remember me for the way I listened, the way I empowered them to grow and for the programming I helped create to bring our community closer. My greatest hope is that my legacy would be about the people I helped and the positive impact we created together.
