We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mohan Koka. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Mohan, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is a normal day like for you right now?
I usually start my day with a walk around the property to connect with the team and get a sense of the day’s energy. From there, it’s a balance of guest interactions, strategy meetings, and overseeing daily operations. I’m also regularly in touch with our ownership group, reviewing capital projects and long-term plans.
A big part of my day is spent in one-on-one conversations with leaders across the hotel to make sure they’re motivated and have the tools they need to succeed. On a monthly basis, I also participate in industry and association board meetings, which gives me a chance to stay connected with peers and the broader hospitality community.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Mohan Koka, General Manager, Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel:
I’ve worked in hospitality for more than 25 years, beginning my career in India and now calling Miami home. Before joining Kimpton and IHG seven and a half years ago, I spent 16 years with Loews Hotels. No matter the role, I’ve always taken a mission-driven approach—committed to seeing things through the highs and the lows.
As a leader, I focus on building strong, connected teams, because I believe people who feel supported can achieve so much more. At Kimpton Surfcomber, that culture extends to the guest experience as well. The hotel stands out for its boutique personality and South Beach energy, with offerings like beachfront yoga, locally driven dining, and creative programming designed to create memorable moments. My mission is to make Surfcomber the top hotel on the beach for both travelers and locals, while continuing to elevate our food and beverage scene.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents had the greatest influence on my approach to work. From humble beginnings, they instilled in me the values of integrity, humility, and perseverance. Over the years, hospitality mentors further shaped my perspective, teaching me that true service is about creating genuine human connections. And with a background in sales, I’ve learned the importance of really listening—whether to employees or to guests—and focusing on what will help them thrive.
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
Like anyone, I’ve faced struggles in my career. One of the most humbling moments was my transition from Sales to Housekeeping. I made several mistakes early on, but those challenges taught me to slow down, listen to the team, and ultimately grow into a more empathetic, compassionate, yet strong leader.
In New Orleans, I learned that a tough market—both group and transient—requires leaning on your internal team as well as partnering with neighbors and community partners to get creative and expand your reach. Later, in Atlanta, I navigated the long process of recovery from a major flood. That experience, which took years to resolve with insurance, reinforced the importance of patience, perseverance, and staying the course even when you’re faced with the unknown.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m deeply committed to building teams and cultures where people truly love coming to work. That’s not something you can achieve overnight—it’s a long-term effort that requires empathy, consistency, and constant attention. When the team thrives, guests can feel that energy, and the business naturally follows.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Yes—there have absolutely been times in my career when I couldn’t wait to get to work, when the possibilities felt endless. I’ve felt that energy here in Miami during major events like Art Basel, when our hotel becomes a canvas for creativity and every day feels electric. Those moments remind me why I chose hospitality—the thrill of creating experiences that guests will remember long after they check out.
I also feel that excitement when I look at Kimpton Surfcomber today compared to when I first took on the role. Seeing how far the hotel has come—its position in the market and its reputation with both clients and guests—is incredibly rewarding. That journey fuels my excitement every day.
