Hi Abigail, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started Letts Shine as a brand centered around training persons who are passionate about learning the art of beauty. I always had a very strong a passion for entrepreneurship and beauty and I worked in the capacity of Fulltime teacher at Secondary School Level for over 12 years. Teaching and beauty are my biggest passions and being able to merge by both passions to help entrepreneurs has been nothing short of amazing!
I have tutored over 5000 students on the art of beauty from beginner to professional level in the past 5 years, 16 of which are now Professional Makeup Artists operating their own businesses in Trinidad and Tobago. Beauty, entrepreneurship and education are topics I am truly passionate about and being able to use my talents and resources to help youths globally.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Many struggles were faced along the way, but the ones that stood out the most were financial obstacles, recruiting the right talent, and digital marketing for various market segments and cultures.
Financial Obstacles:
As with any small business owner, accessing the right amount of capital necessary for growth and development into new and emerging markets has been a huge challenge. Most funds for development has been coming from owner contributions and family assistance which has made business expansion slower than anticipated.
Recruiting the right talent:
Finding the right people to add to the team in different locations has been a challenge as it is difficult to get persons who are skilled in all necessary aspects of their job description in order to maintain quality control.
Digital Marketing for Various Market Segments and Cultures:
Advertising to different audiences and cultures sometimes present a challenge as communication has to be altered based on geographical location..
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My name is Abigail Lett and I am a makeup artist and entrepreneur, holder of MBA in Marketing and Branding and BSC in Business Management and Financial Analysis. I grew my business, Letts Shine, from a small school to a thriving business offering makeup education, mentoring, and services. Through marketing strategies and mentorship programs, I was able to expand my reach in Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Lucia, Barbados and Miami, becoming a leader in the beauty industry.
I initially started Letts Shine as a brand centered around training persons who are passionate about learning the art of beauty. We provide all the materials necessary for all workshops and offer trainings for all persons, from novice to professional.
However, over the years, I tutored over 5000 students, many of which had the passion and drive for business but lacked the funding and basic knowledge of business management to be able to create their own income streams.
In 2024, I was able to launch a non-profit Internship Program for Entrepreneurs in Tobago which was geared toward training young people ages 15 to 25 to engage in on the job training. This program has helped over 200 small business owners in Trinidad and Tobago on entrepreneurship and business management. The reviews are consistently positive and excellent as
they apply what is being learnt. The journey has been quite a roller-coaster, but seeing the impact on youth has been rewarding!
With the success of this Internship Program, the business has thus evolved into Letts Shine Beauty and Business Academy, offering beauty development and business programs for Entrepreneurs in different parts of the Caribbean and Miami, FL. The ultimate goal of these programs are to help young business owners learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, business management and marketing principles and create sustainable income for themselves.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One important lesson I have learnt in my journey as an entrepreneur is:
You would never be 100% ready. And that’s okay! Success begins when you start wherever you are with whatever you have.
Do not wait for the perfect time to start working towards your goals. The perfect time is NOW!
