Rising Stars: Meet Maria Salas of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Salas.

Hi Maria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for writing, and for food and travel. My friends would always ask me for recommendations on places to eat either by type of cuisine or for special occasions because eating out was truly an adventure for me. They encouraged me to start a blog. The year was 2011 and the whole food blogger culture was just starting. There were only a handful of us on the scene writing about the best restaurants out there. I mustered the courage and started writing a blog. That’s how adventuresofthefoodaholic.com was born. I loved mixing humor with my experiences and highlighting spots that truly stood out- especially new ones or small mom and pop businesses. I really wanted to help showcase these gems that were such an integral part of Miami. The food scene was blowing up in the 305 and we offered so many types of cuisines that you could literally eat breakfast in France, lunch in Colombia and dinner in Japan. From there, the social media component hit – Twitter, Facebook and then Instagram. I started adding my adventures with travel and lifestyle to my content creation, and enjoying all the relationships I made along the way. After a few awards, and a growing audience, I got to where I am today. I still continue to enjoy highlighting and sharing these special spots, even 14 years later.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Many life events happened along these 14 years and each one brought a set of challenges. From my divorce after 20 years of marriage, to suddenly becoming a single mom and sole supporter to a teenager, to the loss of my grandmother and father, to the impacts of unexpected illness, sometimes keeping up was difficult, but the ability to share positive moments with my followers coupled with the support of the audience became so important to me. It gave me strength to continue and overcome and throughout each of these struggles, my content became a lifeline. I have seen so many changes to the industry in these years, and it has evolved a lot, but it’s wonderful to see how it has grown and how now there are so many influencers that also share their experiences.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to say I have a bit of a double life. I work during the day as an auditor and have worked in this profession for a very long time. And then at night, I don my fork and become the “Foodaholic”. I really make it a priority to balance the different facets of my life, including the most important part – my family, while still engaging with my followers whom I appreciate so much. While I sacrifice sleep at times, it is a blessing to me to be able to have been given this opportunity to connect with the community this way for over a decade and meet so many amazing people along the way. It also brings a smile to my face to be able to discover amazing spots either locally or abroad, and help get the word out. Especially when I get to see the difference it makes and the positive feedback I receive from both the businesses and my audience. It has enriched my life in more ways than I can express.

What’s next?
I would like to continue sharing the best of Miami and beyond through Adventures of the Foodaholic. I have some surprises in store coming soon and can’t wait to share them. Remember how I said I love writing? Well, I have something in the works that involves that passion and I can’t wait to share it with everyone. It’s been long in coming, but it’s part of my heart and soul – a dream come true. I would even say it’s a bit of nostalgia, history, romance and excitement all wrapped in one. I encourage everyone to follow me on Instagram at @adventuresofthefoodaholic and be a part of this fun culinary journey with me, as well as be one of the first to hear about this exciting news.
