Check Out Dr. Smut’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Smut.

Hi Dr., so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was a child, I was always fascinated with reading in books. I would read every spare minute that I had. When I was a kid, my parents will ground me when I was in trouble by taking away my books and forcing me to go play outside. I have always been really shy and I found solace and friendship in books and loved being able to escape to fantasy world through the pages of my books. Unfortunately, whenever I went to college and started studying to become a doctor, I lost my passion for reading because reading became a chore since I did so much of it for school. It no longer had the joy and fun that it used to. I was so focused on studying and getting through college and medical school and becoming a surgeon that I didn’t even realize that I have lost the joy in something that used to make me so happy. Now I am a surgery resident taking two years off for research so my life is much less hectic. All of a sudden I have all of this extra free time that I’m not used to having anymore, and one of my friends suggested that I read a court of thorns and roses by Sarah J Maas. I had no idea at the time, but when I started that book, I rediscovered this entire piece of myself that I hadn’t even realized I had lost. I once again became a voracious reader, devouring everything in the dark romance and romantasy genres. I decided to start a book talk account to share my love of reading and my obsession with morally Gray men with the world. I honestly did not expect it to get as big as it did so fast, I am absolutely thrilled that it did! I think one of the reasons that it was so successful is because I’m a really shy person around people that I don’t know and most people that I interact with don’t get to see that. But when it’s just me in front of the camera, I get to be my authentic genuine goofy and completely unhinged self and I think That really translates in my content.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! College, Medical school, residency… All of these things have been incredibly difficult. I sacrificed so much of my time energy and missed so many experiences to get where I am today. Up until just a few months ago I was working 80 hours a week as a surgery resident. Working that much doesn’t allow you anytime to pursue your passions whatsoever. Throughout all of this one of the biggest things was that I lost this huge piece of myself, which was a love for reading. I’m so glad that I am finally able to get back to it now that I’m taking some time off for researchand I finally feel whole again.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
While I am both a surgery resident and a book influencer, at the stage of my life, I prefer to be known for my content. My primary social platform is TikTok but I’m also active on Instagram. I post a huge variety of Turkish content from book reviews to skits to lip syncing videos. I love making skits because I enjoy piecing together clips and editing the videos. Additionally, one of my favorite things to do our TikTok lives. I do them multiple times a week and I love giving away books to the people who participate and I giveaway extra books to my subscribers. On Instagram, I’ll create lots of graphic posts, and those are some of my favorite because I get to create some visual art as well. All of these videos allow me to express my creativity while being silly and talking about the things that I’m passionate about. One of the most important things that I try and do with my content is not pressure myself to create anything because I make my best content whenever I’m feeling inspired and I’m talking about something I feel like talking about. I never create a contact just for the sake of content cause I think that’s something that’s really important and I feel like a lot of people lose sight of that.
