Today we’d like to introduce you to Billy Ray.
Hi Billy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Billy Ray’s journey through the world of bartending and spirits is a testament to passion, creativity, and an unyielding commitment to pushing boundaries.
Raised across Europe due to his father’s role in the U.S. military, Billy grew up immersed in a rich blend of cultures that would shape both his worldview and his approach to hospitality. It was in London that he met his mentor, Charlie Hume, who shared a piece of wisdom that would guide Billy’s career for decades to come: “No one ever comes to a bar for a drink; they come for an experience.” That ethos became the cornerstone of Billy’s craft—not just mixing drinks, but creating unforgettable moments.
As one of the original architects of the cocktail renaissance, Billy helped redefine the modern bar scene and elevate the craft cocktail movement. Widely regarded as one of the most influential American bartenders of his generation, he has inspired a global community of professionals and cocktail lovers alike. From implementing beverage programs at the iconic Patina Restaurant Group to designing signature cocktails for Hollywood’s elite and the Sundance Film Festival, Billy’s work has always been about more than what’s in the glass—it’s about storytelling, atmosphere, and artistry.
In 2011, Billy was tapped as Global Mixologist for Cîroc Vodka, creating trend-setting seasonal cocktails for international campaigns. His deep understanding of spirits and hospitality quickly earned him another milestone: becoming the first National Brand Ambassador for both Woodford Reserve and Old Forester. For two years, he traveled the world representing these storied bourbon brands, forging connections with bartenders, distributors, and fans alike.
In 2016, Billy launched 13-Stitches, a consulting firm focused on transforming bar programs and event experiences. His pursuit of innovation led to the creation of Mixwell, a premium line of mixers designed specifically for the modern cocktail. With top-tier ingredients and bartender-first thinking, Mixwell became a favorite behind the bar. The brand’s award-winning Please Don’t Buy Mixwell campaign—developed in partnership with The Many Agency—earned both Clio Awards and a Webby Award, reflecting the bold creativity and resonance of Billy’s vision.
Billy later stepped into the role of Creative Director for Koskenkorva Vodka, where he reimagined the brand’s storytelling and gave new life to its global presence. Today, he serves as Brand Director for Wilde Irish Gin, where he brings his signature blend of style, wit, and strategy to a brand rooted in Irish soul and literary legacy. At Wilde, every creative decision begins with a playful, purposeful question: “What would Oscar Wilde do?”
At the heart of it all, Billy’s philosophy is simple: the world is a better place when you mix well—in cocktails, in branding, and in life. His legacy is one of passion, reinvention, and a relentless drive to elevate the spirits industry through creativity, culture, and community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not even close to a smooth road—but I wouldn’t trade the bumps for anything. The early days were filled with long shifts, late nights, and learning everything the hard way. There were moments of doubt, a few failed services, and plenty of times I was told “no” before ever hearing a “yes.”
Eight years ago, I got sober at a time when a lot of people in the industry had written me off. That moment could’ve ended my career, but instead, it became the start of something much deeper. Sobriety gave me clarity, purpose, and a new perspective on hospitality. I rebuilt from the ground up—not just professionally, but personally. And I discovered that creating meaningful experiences doesn’t require alcohol; it requires intention, connection, and heart.
The past few years brought their own storm—COVID turned the entire industry upside down. Then came the fires in Los Angeles, the writers’ strike, and the challenge of launching a new brand in the middle of it all. Every one of those moments tested me—financially, emotionally, and creatively. But they also forced me to adapt, refocus, and dig deeper into why I do what I do.
That “why” has never been clearer than it is today with Wilde Irish Gin. As an Irish American, this brand means more to me than just spirits—it’s heritage, soul, and pride bottled up in every drop. I am not just helping build a gin company; I’m helping tell a story that honors the past while embracing the future, and I’m doing it with a team that believes in boldness, beauty, and truth.
The road has never been easy—but it’s been real. And every challenge along the way has shaped my commitment to creativity, community, and leaving a legacy that mixes passion with purpose.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a creative builder at heart. My work lives where branding, bartending, and culture collide. I help craft the soul of beverage brands—everything from what’s in the glass to how it makes you feel. That means designing full beverage programs, leading brand direction, shaping voice and visuals, and always making sure the experience is unforgettable.
I’m known for bringing a big creative vision with a bartender’s practicality. I’ve worked across every layer of the industry—from global luxury campaigns to gritty start-ups, from high-volume cocktail bars to international spirits education. Whether it’s writing copy for a new bottle label or designing a pop-up experience at a festival, I’m deeply involved in every detail. I think like a strategist, move like a creative, and communicate like someone who’s actually worked behind the bar—because I have.
What sets me apart? I don’t just build brands. I build belief—internally and externally. I’ve learned how to lead with empathy, collaborate across disciplines, and rally teams around a shared vision. I’m not interested in trends for trend’s sake. I want to make things that last. That connect. That make people feel something.
What I’m most proud of? That I’m still here, still curious, and still pushing. In an industry that moves fast and burns bright, I’ve managed to keep evolving while staying true to what I love: creating work that’s rooted in meaning, memory, and connection.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
For me, finding a mentor has always started with asking for help—something that sounds simple but takes a good dose of humility (and maybe a deep breath or two). I’ve learned that people are way more willing to invest in you if they see you’re not just asking for advice—you’re ready to take direction and actually do the work. Mentorship isn’t about being handed the keys to the kingdom; it’s about showing up, listening, asking thoughtful questions, and then doing what they suggest—even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone or rethinking everything you thought you knew. Some of my biggest growth has come from just saying, “Got it,” and then getting to work. Turns out, being coachable goes a long way.
