Today we’d like to introduce you to Coco Robco.
Hi Coco, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in the beauty industry started when I was a little girl living in Texas. I was very close with my Aunt Janie, who was a diabetic, and I loved giving her “makeovers.” Pampering her brought me so much joy. Coincidentally, I was later diagnosed with diabetes as a 10 year old, which became a pivotal part of my story.
I later moved to Atlanta, where I entered a cosmetology program in high school, becoming the go-to friend for at-home hair color makeovers. My hobbies were reading books on both beauty and things like reflexology and herbal remedies. My passion for beauty and health blossomed, although I took a little detour before I made it my career.
My first few years of adulthood were spent as a college student, bartending, and pursuing my other creative interest, music. Atlanta’s music industry and nightlife exposed me to the layers of beauty, fashion and culture, and shaped my perception of what was cool and trendy.
In 2009, I took a leap of faith to follow my dream and entered an apprenticeship program at a successful salon. The rest is history. I quickly fell in love with coloring hair, and became known for big color corrections and transformations. In those first few years, I styled hair backstage for four seasons of New York Fashion Week, a few celebrity photo shoots, and also became an educator for a national hair color brand.
All the while, I maintained a personal interest in health, and I remembered the hair challenges that both my Aunt Janie and I endured with our Diabetes. I ended up working with a French brand that focused on scalp care, which taught me a lot and gave me a great foundation in understanding scalp health.
I also started offering hair extensions, learning the best methods for different textures and densities of hair. This was the missing element in being able to offer solutions, so women could finally have the hair they dreamed of.
In 2020, the beginning of the pandemic, I moved to Miami. Health was on the forefront of everyone’s mind, and I really plunged into giving the best, cleanest, high quality options to my clients.
This year, I opened my salon suite space “The Sanctuary”, and it has been a dream come true. Although my Aunt Janie passed away many years ago, it’s her and our earliest memories that continue to inspire me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest struggles for me, especially in the beginning, was finding a good work/life balance. Especially with big color makeovers, they can be time consuming and require a lot of attention to detail. Another hurdle was finding a way to stand out from the crowd, when there are so many hair professionals out there. A few pieces of advice I would give to my younger self, or someone else just starting their career, would be to focus on what you’re passionate about and be authentic with that. People really can feel it when you love what you do and don’t rush the process. Your passion is the thing that makes you unique
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a hairstylist that specializes in modern hair color, safe and comfortable hair extensions, scalp health and hair growth. I’m known for my integrity, attention to detail and quality of work. I consider hair color, extensions and growth treatments as my “trifecta,” because they really do go hand-in-hand when trying to achieve your dream hair.
What’s really unique are my hydrodermabrasion and jet plasma treatments for the scalp, which aim to exfoliate, stimulate the follicles and encourage new hair growth. I also pair these treatments with growth factor and stem cell serums. It’s truly next level.
I study ingredients as a hobby lol So my clients love sending me screenshots of their products to make sure they are “Coco Approved.” Working together with my guests, they’ve been able to achieve growth that they hadn’t achieved before.
I named my salon suite space “The Sanctuary” because it really feels that way. All of my products are clean and/or low tox and silicone free. I carry my own brand of hair extensions in various textures so that there is a custom option for everyone. My salon really just has the greatest, laid back luxe vibes.
What makes me most proud is that when a guest comes in for a new look, I never sacrifice the quality of their hair, and they trust me because of that. In a city that is saturated with hairstylists, a quality experience is what sets me apart from others.
What makes you happy?
The number one thing that makes me happy in my life is my son, and seeing him smile. There’s no greater feeling. I’m a people person and an energy person. So, being around and in service of others also brings me joy. When you’re a part of helping someone to feel like their best, confident self, that energy is infectious
