Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Maqueira.
Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being a creative kid, I knew that taking drama class as an extra elective in middle school was the right move since I was curious about the topic. What I didn’t know was that it would unleash this waterfall of passion, creativity, and an understanding of the woman I was becoming. Two years later, when I was thirteen, I was assigned to read “The Hunger Games” in Language Arts class. This led me to watch the movie, and I absolutely fell in love with acting, but specifically acting on film. How the score, cinematography, acting, and editing can all contribute to storytelling and impact our lives. I had to see this through, so I continued with drama in high school and became a Florida Thespian. Where I won superior in a state competition and knew in my heart this was God’s confirmation to make this something I should pursue professionally. Later, I got into a BFA program at Florida International University, where I graduated one year ago. I am forever grateful to the opportunities that I have been given!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were many moments of doubt for sure. Those first two years of college, where I decided to dedicate all my time to my prerequisites, and had no classes on acting. I questioned whether or not this was a reasonable career to maintain. And the answer to that question is YES. The truth is, it’s not a career to enter if you want money or fame, because most of the time that does not happen; it’s a career you enter because you are in love with the art and are willing to pursue it, no matter how ridiculous you look or effort it takes.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
On the surface, when people ask me what I do, I would say I’m an actress, but really, what I’m saying is that I want to make people feel something. A small chuckle, a smile, a laugh, tears from any sort of emotion. If I can affect anyone with my art, however that means to them, I have done my job. I’m so proud that I have been able to keep my love for this art form after all these years, that even as my life changes and I will for sure have different priorities as I get older, there will still be a love in my heart for acting on film. Every single person in this world is unique, so if I focus on being myself and authentically bringing that to the acting, I know that some will see what I can bring to the table.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that in most parts of Miami, you’re at least a 40-minute drive away from the beach and a one-hour drive to the Everglades. The city is filled with diversity and creativity, a place where I know I can flourish. I don’t know if this is my least favorite thing about the city, because sometimes I’m grateful that this is the case, but, unfortunately, we don’t have any seasons. In a way, I’m happy that we’re stuck in eternal summer, but when I come back from a trip, it makes me miss a true fall and winter.
