Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Falcone.
Alicia, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Everyone has a unique story, mine is not an exception, maybe the difference with many people is that as an artist I have the possibility to create, express and translate on a canvas all my lived experiences. My hands are the vehicle to materialize all my imagination. I remembered myself as a teenager living in the Patagonia desert (Argentina) and dreaming to live on a tropical island and traveling. And voila! One day without previous notice, my dreams started to materialize.
I was born in Argentina and graduated as an attorney at law. One day my husband got a job overseas and we ended up moving to live in Singapore with our two kids. Suddenly I was living on a tropical island, a place so exotic and different to any that I could ever imagine.
Happy and excited, l was living in a new environment, traveling and visiting many places around the world. Feeling totally captivated by the Oriental art and the Chinese calligraphy, soon I left behind my career and embraced the passion for calligraphy, Feng Shui, decoration and painting. One trip followed another making of me a consummate traveler and learner. Each place was modeling my believes and taste.
I visited some of the most wonderful places on Earth, saw amazing beaches, sunrises and sunsets…
Buddhism influence and the concepts of energy management from the Feng Shui inspired me to create a modern and abstract version of the classic Asian painting style. My own version and interpretation of the Zen Art for a contemporary audience using prominent Chinese characters over bold colors. A fusion where East meets West in a gracious new way.
When I moved to America I graduated as Interior Decorator and opened my first company offering my services as a Feng Shui consultant and my Zen paintings. Also, I exhibited in many places like Miami, West Palm Beach, New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans and, Columbus.
After many relocations, I returned to Florida and opened Shogo Zen Art, my online store, where my customers can find art, sculptures, photography and fashion accessories.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My two big sources of inspiration are the Buddhism philosophy, a way of life-based on compassion, and the understanding that we are energy/matter vibrating in different frequencies. Our life is a constant and permanent interaction with our surroundings, we are not isolated beings, we are made of multiple elements, that also vibrate.
Feng Shui teaches us about the elements (wood, fire, Earth, metal and water), colors, shapes and, where to place the objects in the best and most auspicious manner to create a beneficial environment for us. Since ancients time Chinese masters were speaking about the influence of the energy in our lives. Recently, modern science confirmed all this ancestral knowledge.
The constant energetic interaction that we are subject to make us feel comfortable, safe, happy, productive or the contrary.
If I have to express what is the meaning of my art, I would have to say it is a positive message of love, compassion and wisdom, fully charged with vibrant energy to infuse not only any room of your home or office with a high vibrational frequency but also your own personal life.
Energy is a very interesting concept to take into consideration when we decide which objects we will acquire to decorate or use in our home or office. Because we are vibrating and interacting at the energy level with our environment, properly choosing how to decorate our place in the right way is essential.
In other words, each time we enter a place, our energy field captures tons of information. I should say, energy information that makes us feel in different ways… happy, serene, tired, sleepy, nervous, anxious, relaxed or hipper. Simply put, we are interacting energetically all the time.
At the end, it is up to us to choose wisely which kind of energy we want to bring into our life.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Yes, it is true. Artists are kind of lonely people. We retreat a lot to create. If I have to give any advice is not to be afraid or intimidate, share your talents, show your art!
Artists’ life historically has been very challenging. Last October I was in Amsterdam visiting Van Goh museum, admiring his exquisite art and reading the letters he used to write to his brother. There, he expressed his frustration as an artist mainly because he needed his brother’s economic support most of the time to survive.
Still today for artists the reality is a constant dare. The difference is that now we have the advantage of the social media that allows artists to show their art for free. So, I can say life has become easier for artists in recent years in terms of communication and exhibits. Furthermore, many cities, museums and many associations organize a lot of public art events quite accessible that allow emergent artists to be seen and known.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I opened my first company, AF Private Collection, Inc., in 2003 with my own innovative vision of Zen and Oriental paintings. Then, I ventured into e-commerce opening Shogo Zen Art, my first online store, in 2018. At this time, I added to my Zen Art paintings, repurposed antique sculptures, photography and recently, fashion accessories.
The most important and distinct aspect of my artwork is that I focus on “energy” as an inspirational source. My artwork is created to transmit positive and high vibrational energy to improve my client’s surroundings and hence fill up with auspicious energy any environment.
