Meet Daisy Cabrera of Cabrera Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Cabrera.

Hi Daisy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My career in communications began in the late ’90s at Manning, Selvage & Lee, where I supported major pharmaceutical clients. As a Senior Account Executive, I handled FDA approval announcements (including Lunelle birth control), staffed medical meetings, collaborated with healthcare nonprofits, media trained physicians and patients, and contributed to new business efforts.

I then transitioned to JeffreyGroup as a Supervisor, managing global accounts: British Airways and FedEx. I led cross-functional teams across Latin America (specifically Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela) as well as my local office team. We executed media relations, organized FAM trips for top-tier media, and launched new products, amenities and services. Following 9/11, my focus shifted to crisis communications and issues management – crafting media statements, and media training airport personnel.

Next, I joined Euro RSCG Magnet as an Associate Vice President, overseeing remote teams and managing Hispanic-focused campaigns for Splenda, Lactaid, Marshalls, and HomeGoods. I helped launch Splenda Sugar Blend for Baking, and led the annual “Chef Spléndido” culinary student contest with celebrity chef Lorena Garcia and a panel of esteemed media. I also served as the Spanish-language spokesperson for Marshalls and HomeGoods, representing both brands during national and regional media interviews.

Seeking an in-house career shift, I became Vice President of Media Relations at JPMorgan Chase, supporting all lines of business in Florida – consumer banking, credit card, small business, middle market, and private bank. I led regional communications surrounding the launch of Chase’s mobile banking app, oversaw reactive media responses during the housing crisis, promoted philanthropic initiatives, and coordinated ribbon-cutting ceremonies of branch openings in partnership with government relations. Internally, I produced town halls reaching 15,000 employees statewide.

Today, I am a brand and corporate communications consultant servicing blue-chip consumer lifestyle clients spanning beauty, fashion, CPG, food & beverage, travel & tourism, media, and entertainment – leveraging almost three decades of multi-faceted experience to drive meaningful impact, deliver measurable results that resonate, channel purpose-driven communications into bold outcomes, and shape dynamic stories that influence both mainstream and multicultural media and tastemakers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Having worked on the agency side, in-house, and as a consultant – I’ve enjoyed a rewarding and well-rounded career. However, it hasn’t always been a smooth journey – especially managing crisis.

First, 9/11 was a defining moment in my career. I was immediately thrust into the unfamiliar world of crisis communications – learning in real time, under intense pressure, with tons of uncertainty. Pivoting from launching British Airways’ leather cabin interiors and FedEx’s newly enhanced products and services to emergency rapid-fire response – I worked alongside clients and managed my teams to help navigate the unprecedented uncertainty. This experience tested my resilience, sharpened my instincts, and solidified my ability to manage cross-country teams calmly and strategically under pressure.

Working with JPMorgan Chase during the housing crisis – particularly in a communications role – was a high-stakes, high-pressure experience that demanded transparency, empathy, and strategic agility. I was responsible for navigating a constantly shifting media landscape, where public trust in financial institutions was at low. My role involved crafting sensitive messaging around mortgage assistance programs, and foreclosures in particular. Working to humanize the bank’s response while protecting the privacy of our customers, my proactive media outreach covered charitable support to nonprofits and mortgage modification programs available to communities. Aligning messaging that was laser-focused on accessibility and accuracy was the constant priority. Certainly, it was a crash course in reputation management under fire – and it underscored the critical importance of trust, empathy, and consistency in corporate communications.

As a consultant, I led multicultural media relations for a high-profile public health initiative – supporting the launch of the U.S. government’s COVID-19 treatment clinical trial at the height of the global pandemic. Managing national and regional press outreach during one of the most pivotal public health crises in recent history meant not only raising awareness – but doing so with urgency and culturally-nuanced sensitivity. This included supporting 240+ local study sites across the country. With Black and Hispanic communities experiencing disproportionately high COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, we focused on enrolling participants from these underrepresented groups – who historically have among the lowest clinical trial participation rates. I led media training for top infectious disease experts, equipping them to communicate the importance of diverse representation in clinical trials and to address the deep-rooted mistrust and fear many in these communities feel toward government-led health initiatives.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m a strategic communications consultant with decades of experience helping brands tell powerful stories that resonate across mainstream and multicultural audiences – that are inclusive, human-centered, and media-savvy.

My brand and corporate communications expertise span a wide range of industries – from consumer lifestyle, healthcare, beauty, fashion, and telecom to food & beverage, travel & tourism, arts & culture, technology and more.

What sets me apart is my ability to shift from one industry to another seamlessly. This requires a strategic approach that highlights my transferable skills, adaptable mindset, and results-driven track record. Also, I’m proud of the work I do in seamlessly blending cultural relevance with strategic messaging. From launching new products, programming events, and content creation to crisis response, executive media training, and influencer partnerships – I bring deep experience, and trusted senior-level counsel to every client engagement.

I’ve had the honor of supporting some of the world’s most recognized names – Nike, CoverGirl, British Airways, Heineken, AMEX, Pfizer, and Macy’s – just to name a few. And, I’ve worked with A-list celebrities including Sofia Vergara, Anthony Bourdain, Stephen Marley, Billy Crystal, Juanes, Tony Bennett, Ne-Yo and Marc Anthony.

My work is rooted in authenticity, and I approach every assignment with equal parts strategy and soul.

Writing is at the core of communications, and I am a freelance lifestyle writer covering everything South Florida has to offer – from SOBEWFF, Art Basel, and Miami Swim Week to new restaurant openings, live concerts, and profiles of award-winning chefs.

What does success mean to you?
Pablo Picasso once said, “Action is the foundational key to success.”

For me, taking action leads to professional success: doing meaningful work, creating impact, shaping perception, fostering connection, cultivating relationships, driving visibility, nurturing creativity, crafting narratives, mentoring teams, collaborating with cross-teams, and inspiring others to take action in their professional careers as well. At the end of the day, I thrive helping organizations communicate clear, concise and consistent messaging with stakeholders – with purpose, integrity, authenticity and intention.

Being of service is the formula to my personal success. While sitting on the national board of Hispanic Public Relations Association for seven years, I launched the Miami Chapter as the Founding President. A strong believer in protecting civil rights, I was part of the American Civil Liberties Union Miami’s Chapter board for three years. Supporting community is also part of this passion. I’ve been a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists for over a decade, and currently volunteer with the South Florida Chapter.
