Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Fayad.
Hi Tamara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I always knew that I wanted a career path that gave me freedom, purpose, and a great work-life balance. While I did try the traditional corporate career path fresh out of college I quickly realized to achieve my goal I would have to go out on my own. So, I too a leap of faith and became a full-time yoga instructor. I didn’t know exactly how I would align this new career I chose with the goal I had in mind for my future but I knew that I believed that I could do it. With a mix of hard work, struggle, hustle, privilege, and luck I finally achieved my goal. A decade later, I am living the life I imagined for myself and am helping other fitness instructors achieve a sense of freedom and financial stability.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I had many years of struggle to make ends meat, working multiple side gigs, taking on a ton of classes and driving all across South Florida. I also had many moments of self doubt, thinking I wasn’t good enough to make this happen and I even had a therapist once tell me that my personality didn’t align with one of a business owner ( I changed therapists).
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started off as a yoga instructor in 2014. Now, I am a business owner of a luxury on-site fitness and wellness events business. I am still a yoga instructor at heart and my work with my private clients is still the most fulfilling part of my career. Beyond teaching privates, SFL Yoga & Wellness serves all of South Florida offering private fitness events for corporate offices and retreats as well as bachelorette parties. We’ve recently expanded our offerings to Savannah, Georgia and plan on continuing to new cities this year.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’ve always been very bad at networking honestly, I kind of still dread it to this day. It’s more of my own personal social anxiety issues than anything else. The advice I would give, especially if you are someone like me is to take small steps towards getting yourself more comfortable with networking. You don’t have to do traditional networking, you can join a group that aligns with your career or values, and you can try virtual groups and mentoring which is a little less intimidating than in person.
