Today we’d like to introduce you to Hilary Musser.
Hi Hilary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey in real estate and design began in 1996 when I encountered a unique challenge while building a home in Nantucket. In the middle of winter, our cottage on the dune was filled with sand, and the foundation hadn’t even been started—despite payments to the builder. Frustrated, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I brought in a crew led by a guy from the Poconos, who had done excellent work on our Lake Naomi cottage, and we completed the project ourselves, essentially acting as our own general contractors. That experience sparked my passion for building, leading me to found Barclay Fine Homes.
I bought and developed five more lots on Nantucket, experiencing great success with those projects, and later expanded my endeavors in Nantucket and Palm Beach. When I relocated to Palm Beach, I earned my real estate license—and eventually my broker’s license—to help facilitate my property investments. This paved the way for me to grow my real estate business organically through word-of-mouth and selective clients.
In 2000, I also launched my interior design firm. My passion for design stemmed from early experiences working with high-end designers, where I realized I had a natural flair for the work. I established my own accounts with leading Italian brands, fabric houses, and wallpaper companies—relationships I’ve cherished for over 25 years.
Throughout my career, I’ve blended my entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, and determination to create luxury homes that resonate with elegance and sophistication. From building luxury spec homes to crafting stunning interiors, this journey has been my passion and purpose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path to success has been anything but smooth, especially in an industry as volatile as real estate development. One of the earliest challenges I faced was navigating the ups and downs of the building market. Good markets brought opportunity, while soft markets required resilience and strategy to push through.
In the early 2000s, I also encountered significant financial hardships during the tech crash, which deeply impacted my then-husband and myself due to our investments in high-tech companies. However, I leaned into my creative instincts and entrepreneurial mindset to rebuild.
The construction business itself has its challenges, from managing contractors to ensuring that every project meets my high standards of quality and design. But each obstacle has shaped me, teaching me the importance of adaptability, persistence, and creative problem-solving. These lessons have allowed me to thrive in both real estate and interior design, ultimately building a successful career that I deeply enjoy.

I specialize in building and designing luxurious homes that seamlessly blend architectural elegance with contemporary design. With nearly three decades of experience in real estate development and interior design, my work focuses on creating bespoke, highly curated spaces that reflect both sophistication and individuality.
One of my proudest achievements is my own home in West Palm Beach’s historic district. This 11,000-square-foot estate balances traditional Palm Beach architecture with sleek modernity. Collaborating with architect David Lawrence, I designed the front to complement the district’s historic aesthetic, while the back reveals a bold contemporary style. Inside, my passion for Italian design shines through. I partnered with Zanotta to create custom furniture, including a sofa designed to preserve stunning water views.
The home’s standout features include a dramatic living room ceiling crafted from Italian walnut by Foglie d’Oro and a dazzling Papillons chandelier by Sonneman. The primary bedroom showcases a custom Foglie d’Oro installation and a massive 164-inch-wide bed with a velvet headboard.
What sets me apart is my ability to integrate bold modern elements with timeless elegance, creating spaces that are both innovative and inviting. By blending luxurious materials, bespoke furnishings, and striking art—including works by Cuban artist Jorge Luis Santos—I ensure every home I design feels unique, personal, and extraordinary. My goal is to craft homes that inspire and elevate the way people live.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is about creating something that leaves a lasting impact—whether it’s a beautifully designed home, a meaningful client relationship, or a moment of inspiration sparked by my work. Success is not just measured by accolades or financial gains but by the joy and fulfillment I derive from doing what I love.
In my career, success comes from balancing creativity with precision, pushing boundaries while honoring tradition, and delivering homes that exceed expectations. It’s about seeing a client’s face light up when they walk into a space that feels uniquely theirs or knowing that I’ve turned a vision into a tangible reality.
Personally, success means resilience—the ability to navigate challenges with grace, learn from setbacks, and continue evolving. It’s also about staying true to my passions and values, whether designing homes that inspire or curating art that tells a story.
Ultimately, success is about living a life of purpose and creativity, making a positive impact on those around me, and finding gratitude in both the big wins and the quiet moments of accomplishment. It’s a journey, not a destination, and one I embrace wholeheartedly every day.
