Today we’d like to introduce you to FURKAN TAN
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Furkan Tan’s journey from Istanbul to Los Angeles and beyond is quite inspiring. His early passion for architecture and design seems to have driven him to pursue excellence, culminating in a strong foundation at the Art Institute of Los Angeles. It’s fascinating that after working with a top interior design firm in Beverly Hills, his exclusive clientele recognized his potential and encouraged him to branch out on his own. That’s a testament to his talent and the trust clients place in his vision.
Pietra Casa Studios must be an incredible reflection of his journey, combining his global influences and expertise into a unique design philosophy. With clients spanning the globe, it’s clear his commitment to the finest materials and designs has resonated with those seeking the best.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s rare for anyone to have a completely smooth journey, especially in a highly competitive field like architecture and design. Furkan Tan’s path, marked by significant milestones and success, likely came with its own set of challenges.
One major struggle could have been the transition from working in a top-tier design firm in Beverly Hills to launching his own independent studio. Establishing a new brand, particularly one that seeks to combine Eastern luxury with Western architectural simplicity, may have initially been met with some skepticism or difficulty in securing a foothold in the industry. Building a reputation and client base from scratch can be incredibly tough, even for someone with a strong background and connections.
Additionally, the challenges of managing both residential and commercial projects may have required a great deal of balancing—each comes with its own specific demands, budgets, timelines, and expectations. As Pietra Casa Studios grew, Furkan Tan likely had to navigate staffing, scaling operations, and ensuring that the quality of design remained uncompromising despite any growing pains.
Cultural influences might also play a role in the challenges he faces, especially in merging different design philosophies from the East and West, which can sometimes present hurdles in terms of client expectations or regional tastes.
Despite these hurdles, his ability to persevere and create a space like Pietra Casa, with a global client base and widespread acclaim, speaks volumes about his dedication and resilience in overcoming challenges.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 pandemic was a transformative period for everyone, and for those of us in the design and architecture industry, it brought many unexpected lessons and opportunities for growth.
One of the most important lessons learned during this time was the value of adaptability and resilience. The world came to a sudden halt, and the way we worked, interacted, and even thought about spaces changed dramatically. For example, residential design became even more focused on creating functional, comfortable environments that people could live, work, and relax in. Clients started prioritizing home offices, outdoor spaces, and areas that promote well-being and mental health. This shift in priorities taught us to be more flexible and responsive to the evolving needs of our clients, ensuring that our designs were more than just aesthetically pleasing, but also purposeful and supportive of the new lifestyle dynamics.
Another key lesson was the importance of technology and virtual collaboration. While we were unable to meet clients in person for a period of time, we embraced technology in new ways. Virtual consultations, digital presentations, and design software that allows for remote collaboration became vital tools in continuing our work. This experience reinforced the need for innovation and staying up-to-date with technological advances to ensure smooth project management, even in challenging times.
Additionally, the pandemic highlighted the importance of sustainability in design. People became more aware of their surroundings and their impact on the environment, leading to an increased demand for eco-conscious materials, energy-efficient designs, and sustainable practices. It also inspired us to consider how our designs could support not just the present but the future—both for the environment and for the well-being of those who inhabit these spaces.
Lastly, the pandemic reinforced the power of community. During a time of uncertainty, our team and clients came together with a shared sense of purpose and support. This period of collective challenge also allowed us to strengthen our relationships with our clients, showing them that, even in difficult times, we were committed to delivering the best and ensuring that their vision was realized.
Overall, the Covid-19 crisis taught us to be more adaptable, to embrace technology, to prioritize sustainability, and to value human connection. These lessons continue to shape how we approach design at Pietra Casa and will likely influence the direction of the industry for years to come.
