Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Marichal & Cailyn Guevara
Hi Isabel & Cailyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We met in a college class at Florida International University and instantly became friends within minutes of meeting. We like to call it kismet. Upon getting to know each other, we discovered our shared interest and dream of starting a podcast. We bonded over this concept of “falling behind” and felt comforted in having someone else in their early 20’s who experienced the same worries and feelings of loneliness. That’s when it hit us. “Let’s make a podcast that focuses on this overwhelming, and sometimes confusing transition into adulthood.”
We thought that if we found somebody that related to our circumstances (inexperienced, living at home, unemployed, full time student, etc.), then there would also be a whole community of people who felt the same. “Full Time Daughter” is our self-proclaimed title that comes from a time in our life where our identity was solely tied to being a daughter and all of the responsibilities that came with it. The meaning of that title still stands, but has more depth today. Now, Full Time Daughter explores different facets, including womanhood, home/family life, the social scene in Miami, mental/emotional health, and lessons we’ve learned throughout our personal journeys and friendship. We share these stories on our microphones and social media in hopes of building a positive community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a winding road full of so many roadblocks and hesitation. Although there is a lot of passion, we went into creating Full Time Daughter with little to no experience in podcasting and marketing. We knew we could talk about any subject for hours on end. However, crafting a 45-60 minute episode that was compelling and vulnerable was not so easy for us. We realized our biggest roadblock was always the perception of others and the fear of being judged for having a different lifestyle that isn’t as common for a 20 something year old living in such a vibrant city. It took a lot of back and forth and open communication to be honest with ourselves and bring that to the podcast. Even now, it’s natural to second guess ourselves but we try to practice what we preach and not let the opinions of others steer us away from our goals for Full Time Daughter.
On a more technical note, we find that producing the episodes is the most strenuous part of the process. Everything you see by Full Time Daughter is completely done by Isa and Cailyn. This includes the creative process of planning episodes, filming, editing, posting, marketing and branding ourselves, all while on our own dime. And of course, since our work is on social media, we’re always trying to find what content works best for our niche.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re the hosts of a lifestyle/entertainment podcast named “Full Time Daughter.” Our podcast focuses on keeping a positive mindset despite being on a different timeline. For example, there are expectations when you’re in your 20’s to be living alone, in a relationship, having that amazing internship or a dependable 9 to 5, or just having crazy fun while you’re “still young.” For us, we live quite the opposite lifestyle. We live at home with family, we’re single, self-employed, and sometimes experience social anxiety. We bring all of these personal experiences on the podcast sharing storytimes, advice, and lessons we’ve learned by stepping out of our comfort zones. We challenge ourselves to live life more freely and encourage our listeners to do the same despite the pressures.
The thing we’re most proud of is how we actually chased our dream. Yes, it comes with a lot of work, and it’s been a slow process but it;s been very rewarding. Every time we receive a follow or comment, we scream and text each other over the excitement. We’re just proud of ourselves for showing up consistently and growing from the versions of ourselves that started this journey into who we are now.
“I think that our vulnerability sets us apart from other podcasts. We’re never ashamed to admit our rights and wrongs and share the different sides to us,” said Cailyn.
“Our friendship is the heart of the show. Cailyn has her own life and I have mine, but every Friday when we sit to record, it becomes this shared thing between our listeners and us. It just feels like you’re catching up with old friends,” said Isa.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Full Time Daughter happened post COVID but we both changed so much since that time. We dealt with being on our own, lost some friends along the way, and felt disconnected from our passions. We’ve learned to not self isolate. Isa lives by her “why not?” mindset and Cailyn lives by “who cares?”
