Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Mahaney
Hi Stephanie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to creating spaces that foster joy and connection. Growing up in Bronxville, NY, my family moved frequently, renovating six homes in just ten years. This gave me a front-row seat to the world of design. I spent countless hours with my mother and our decorator, John Rapillo, choosing paint colors, furniture, and finishes. Those early experiences shaped my love for interiors and taught me that a home is more than a structure.
After honing my skills as a lead designer at Kemble Interiors, I launched Stephanie Rae Interiors in 2014. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working on diverse projects, from high-profile commercial spaces to unique luxury residences. Now, based in Maine and Florida, my firm continues to grow, and I’m thrilled to create spaces filled with warmth, beauty, and meaning.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—more like a winding one with plenty of learning curves! Balancing my design work between Florida and Maine has been a big adjustment. Every region has its own architectural styles, client needs, and ways of working, so I have to adapt and rethink how I approach my projects based on where they live.
There were also the universal struggles that come with running a business—navigating client relationships, managing timelines, and making sure every detail aligns with the vision we set out to achieve. It’s a balancing act, but it’s also where the most growth happens.
Another hurdle has been adapting to construction differences. In Florida, concrete block construction is the norm, but in Maine, there’s more wood framing, crawl spaces, and historic architecture to consider. It’s fun though! I get to immerse myself in understanding different insulation standards, working with century-old moldings, and sourcing materials that respect the area’s rich history while still feeling fresh.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
One of the biggest risks I took was relocating my family home from Florida to Maine. It wasn’t just a change in scenery; it was a complete shift in how I approach my client base, design aesthetic, and the way I work. I have a fabulous network in Florida of clients, subs, and vendors. I’m very lucky to travel to Florida and keep growing those relationships while also finding new ones. In Maine, I’m starting fresh in a place where I have to reintroduce myself and my brand to a completely different market.
The change has taught me that risk is often where opportunity lives. It forced me to trust in my skills and adapt to new challenges, which ultimately is helping me grow as both a designer and business owner. While not every risk guarantees success, the process of taking it can open doors you never knew existed—and that makes it worthwhile.
