Life & Work with Alana Reina of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Reina

Hi Alana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Miami a year ago, both for the beautiful weather and palm trees, and also because I felt called to pursue my career in wellness here and be part of the thriving and growing wellness community in Miami. I am a holistic mental health therapist and coach, and plan to open a holistic center in Miami in the next year, which will offer both holistic psychotherapy as well as acupuncture, yoga, meditation, holistic spa treatments, holistic medicine, a coworking and event space, a cafe and more. It has been a dream of mine to open a holistic center since I finished my bachelors in psychology over a decade ago, and I could not be more excited to see my vision come to life soon!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! I have had to pivot so many times, deal with so many setbacks, and experience (a lot of) my own trauma along the way. I have also moved around several times, gaining so much during each chapter and learning so much about myself and the world. One of my favorite chapters was living in San Diego during grad school, where I lived steps from the beach and taught yoga. Moving back home to DC after was the most difficult period of my life so far, not only because I moved back in with my family in my twenties and early thirties (if you have done that then I am sure you can relate!), but also getting stuck there longer than expected. The first few years, I struggled to find a job even with a masters degree, and eventually realized that pursuing non-profit work was not aligning with my career goals or skills and got licensed as a clinical social worker to start doing therapy. I was in the DC area during covid, and right when I was moving out of my studio and hoping to move to Miami in early 2022, my dad’s cancer progressed and I ended up moving back home and helped caretake for him until he passed in May 2023. When I finally moved to Miami in February 2024, it felt like a monumental achievement, but that was only the beginning! I cannot wait to see where the journey takes me this year.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My holistic approach is a culmination of all my academic, professional and personal experience with life and recognition of the need for a more well rounded perspective when it comes to wellness. In addition to my career as a social worker and therapist, I have always loved traveling, being outdoors, listening to music and creating through various mediums. I taught three different types of yoga in San Diego (mat yoga, aerial yoga and paddleboard yoga), have traveled all over the country and world on my own, speak four languages, and have had some really incredible and memorable experiences throughout my adult life so far. I also have struggled with my own chronic health issues and dealt with the frustration of being shuffled from one doctor to the next with no real answers. Throughout that journey, I have learned so much about wellness and the need for a holistic approach that considers the mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural wellness of a person and aims to get to the root of dis-ease and discomfort!

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
In any helping profession, it is crucial to have empathy, compassion and self awareness, but I think the wide range of experiences I have had in my life allow me to relate to people – clients and otherwise – on a much deeper level. I have a sense of spirituality that allows me to take a step back and see things from a different perspective, and that lens not only helps me with my therapy clients, but it allows me to navigate life more intuitively as well. I bring all these qualities to my ambitions of opening a holistic center, because it is somewhat unconventional and I think my ability to see how it will help the community takes a lot of confidence and passion but also the foresight to see how it will fit into the culture here! I am most proud of my ability to pick my life up and move somewhere new on my own, time after time, with the hope and optimism that I will gain something new and valuable from each chapter, despite all the many challenges that I will face. This chapter has been the most rewarding and challenging so far, but I feel so aligned with the energy here and know that I am meant to be here!
