Inspiring Conversations with Alena O’connell of The Mystical Mermaid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alena O’connell

Hi Alena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to the Keys nearly 30 years ago after a harsh winter in Virginia. I worked at various local stores and after a few years, decided it was time to be my own boss. I started as a small candle and soap shop in the Rain Barrel. After a year, I needed more space and to follow my heart. I opened “The Mystical Mermaid “ at a location slightly south of our current location. After a few years, I outgrew that location as well. I moved right after hurricane Irma, to our current location and followed my passions of mermaids and metaphorical items. Our store is unique in the area and we add a bit of magic every day. We are uniquely us!!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Opening a larger store right after hurricane Irma was challenging. Just as things were getting back to normal, we entered into the pandemic. Those two things along with a lagging economy has made the last few years a challenge, but I stay encouraged by the people that love our store and keep us moving forward.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Mystical Mermaid ?
We are a mermaid themed metaphysical store. We sell mermaid swim tails, mermaid art, and clothing. The other half of our space is dedicated to souvenirs and crystals and incense. We carry tarot cards, sage and healing gems and bracelets.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am a mother of four and a grandmother to eleven and a great grandmother to 2. I love the zen atmosphere of my store, but I also love to travel the world.
