Life & Work with Martha Paredes of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martha Paredes

Hi Martha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Caracas, where at the age of nine, I discovered that music was more than sound—it was a language that connected me to the world. My first steps were in the cultural centers of Petare and Chacao, where I learned that every rhythm carries a story waiting to be told.

Over the years, my journey has taken me to stages alongside incredible artists like, Chino y Nacho, Alejandro Sanz, and Nacho, Franco de Vita… But my greatest achievement isn’t measured by the names I’ve worked with—it’s in the moments: witnessing how a conga or timbale can transform a space and bring people together. Introducing Latin percussion into urban music has been my way of breaking boundaries, proving that tradition and innovation can harmonize beautifully.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been an easy journey. Recognizing and believing in my talent has been a truly significant challenge.
For years, I’ve worked on overcoming Impostor’s Syndrome through therapy.

At the age of 15, I experienced my first frustration when I wasn’t selected as a conga player for a salsa band in Caracas. This led me to take refuge in the timbales, setting the conga aside for approximately 10 years, until I joined Chino and Nacho’s band in 2009. However, I am very grateful for that episode of frustration, as studying the timbales allowed me to master a new instrument that eventually provided me with rhythmic tools and languages to grow into a well-rounded percussionist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently the percussionist for the band “Los Fantásticos,” which accompanies international artist Nacho. Thanks to our performances in songs like “Te Quiero Más,” “Contigo,” and “Destino,” I have had the privilege of deeply connecting with audiences, earning their respect and admiration. This recognition inspired me to explore my role as a producer, and since 2020, I have released my own singles: “Agua de Mar,” followed by “Valora” and “Bailamos la Dos.”

What sets me apart from other musicians is my unique contribution to the integration of Latin percussion into the urban genre. This style previously lacked the richness and vibrancy it now embodies. Together with Los Fantásticos, I’ve had the opportunity to break established patterns, adding rhythmic and melodic dynamics that redefine the boundaries of the genre.

I am proud to know that my work is not only recognized but also serves as an inspiration. Through my masterclass “Breaking Patterns,” I share my experience and knowledge with young musicians aspiring to make their way in the industry. Seeing how my rhythmic approach impacts and motivates new generations is, without a doubt, one of the greatest achievements of my career.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe that each day brings more opportunities and tools to realize our desired projects. However, with the advent of artificial intelligence, we must become more well-rounded artists, offering high-value content that leaves a lasting impression on the audience. This reminds us that art and entertainment are about connection, soul, and spirit.
