Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherrie Sherman
Hi Cherrie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Before co-founding Home Helpers Home Care of Boca Raton, I dedicated myself full-time to scientific research, driven by a deep passion for understanding the complexities of disease development and finding ways to cure or improve health outcomes for patients. My journey to becoming a scientist began in humble beginnings in the Philippines, where I initially worked as a high school science teacher. Before fully pursuing my scientific career, I also worked as a cruise ship and airline attendant, experiences that allowed me to travel the world, interact with diverse people, and develop a broad worldview. While these roles were far removed from research, my desire to become a scientist—something I’ve always aspired to since my teenage years—remained unwavering and only strengthened with each experience.
I eventually moved to London, United Kingdom, to begin my academic journey. Determined to turn my passion for science into a career, I completed degrees in molecular and cellular biology and, after years of hard work, earned my PhD. After finishing my doctorate, I moved to New York City to continue my research as a postdoctoral fellow. It was there that I met my husband, Ryan Sherman, and our shared passion for service and helping others brought us closer together. Several years later, we moved to Boca Raton, Florida, in 2021, driven by the challenges and changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the years that followed, I had the privilege of collaborating on groundbreaking biomedical research aimed at developing therapeutic solutions for complex diseases. My work spanned several exciting areas, including the development of peptide inhibitors for autoimmune diseases, exploring the role of the microbiome in colorectal cancer, and investigating gene therapy and cell-free therapeutics for cardiac regeneration. Through these projects, I have contributed to advancing science in ways I hope will ultimately restore health and improve lives.
In addition to my research, I’ve been fortunate to mentor and, hopefully, inspire the next generation of scientists. I take great pride in fostering a legacy of curiosity, excellence, and innovation among my students and colleagues.
While my professional life in science has been incredibly rewarding, I also draw inspiration from my multicultural background. Born in Manila, Philippines, and now a British citizen living in the United States, I believe my global perspective enriches both my research and community engagement. Outside of my scientific work, I am an avid traveler and have been fortunate to visit over 200 destinations across 60 countries. Travel has broadened my worldview and deepened my appreciation for diverse cultures, which I incorporate into every aspect of my life.
My husband and I co-founded Home Helpers Home Care of Boca Raton, where we provide compassionate in-home care services to families in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, and the surrounding areas. This venture has allowed me to broaden my impact, supporting individuals and families in ways that complement my scientific background and passion for service.
Ultimately, my journey—whether in research, academia, or the homes of those we serve—has been driven by an unwavering commitment to making a meaningful difference. Whether through pioneering scientific research, mentoring future scientists, or providing compassionate care, I remain dedicated to contributing positively to the world around me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Completing a PhD in London, UK, is a monumental challenge. The process of obtaining meaningful data from experiments often feels like an uphill battle, requiring endless hours of troubleshooting equipment, refining research protocols, and interpreting results. Experiments frequently fail, forcing constant adjustments and repetitions that test patience and perseverance. I have experienced countless days where progress seemed agonizingly slow, with long stretches of uncertainty and frustration. The pressure to contribute new knowledge to the field while meeting tight deadlines and navigating the demanding expectations of academia only intensifies the struggle.
Equally challenging is the journey of launching Home Helpers Home Care of Boca Raton. In an industry saturated with established providers, building a reputation and standing out is no small feat. My husband and I have had to juggle multiple roles—marketer, networker, and manager—while tirelessly earning the trust of clients and their families. Developing relationships with referral partners, assembling a dependable team, and establishing credibility in a competitive market require resilience and resourcefulness. These challenges, however, are deeply rooted in the same qualities that helped me thrive in the lab: determination, problem-solving, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in people’s lives—whether through advancing biomedical science or providing compassionate care to those in need.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is making a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Whether through advancing biomedical science or providing compassionate care to those in need, my commitment is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves support, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive.
In my career as a scientist, I’ve devoted countless hours to understanding complex biological systems, driven by the hope that my work might one day contribute to better treatments and improved health outcomes. Each experiment, no matter how challenging, is a step toward discoveries that could change lives.
