Inspiring Conversations with Michelle Bissainthe of Chelley B Collections

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Bissainthe.

Michelle Bissainthe

Hi Michelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always fascinated by hair and the endless ways you could style it. My mom played a huge role in shaping this passion—she would do my hair in so many creative styles, and as I got older, I started helping her with hers. By the time I was in high school and later in college, my love for hair had grown even stronger.

In 2017, I discovered wig-making through YouTube. After watching countless tutorials, I decided to try making my first wig. The moment I finished it, I was hooked. I began experimenting with different textures, colors, and techniques, constantly improving my skills. A big part of this journey was learning to prioritize quality. I tested hair from multiple vendors, determined to understand what made some products better than others.

For me, wigs weren’t just about styling; they were about protecting my natural hair. Balancing college, work, and proper hair care was tough. There were so many concerns—heat damage, frizz, hairline protection—it often left me frustrated. Wigs became a lifesaver, allowing me to explore bold new looks while preserving my natural hair.

As people started noticing my wigs and asking questions, I realized I wasn’t alone in these struggles. That inspired me to start Chelley B Collections. I wanted to help women feel confident and bold, giving them the freedom to experiment without worrying about damaging their natural hair.

I started with a $100 wig construction service in college, where I’d recommend vendors and create wigs for clients. It was a hit, but I soon realized how taxing wig-making could be. After a year of intense research, I transitioned into wholesaling, sourcing the best quality hair for my customers. It took years of trial and error, but I stayed committed to the vision.

In October 2024, now living in Miami, I officially rebranded and launched Chelley B Collections, and it’s been an incredible journey so far. Though there’s still so much to learn and build, I’m excited about the future of the brand. I’m grateful for how far I’ve come and for the chance to inspire and empower women through my work.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has been a lesson that shaped Chelley B Collections into what it is today.

Being a one-woman team has been one of the biggest hurdles. I’ve had to juggle everything—from connecting with customers and managing sales to marketing, branding, securing business funding, and building relationships with vendors. On top of that, I was balancing being a full-time student, working full-time, and trying to build this business.

Then came COVID-19, which was a major setback. I was let go from my job in NYC, and it put a pause on everything. I had to reevaluate how I would navigate this new reality, especially as it became harder to order hair from vendors for testing.

One of my biggest internal struggles was battling perfectionism. I kept delaying my launch because I wanted everything to be perfect. It took a lot of reflection to realize that perfection doesn’t exist and that growth would come through experience, not waiting for the “perfect” moment. This mindset shift allowed me to finally move forward and embrace the process, flaws and all.

Every step of the journey has come with its challenges, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. Despite the struggles, I’ve enjoyed every bit of this experience and remain committed to the vision.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
There are several resources that help me show up as my best self in life and work. YouTube and TikTok are invaluable for learning—I’m always discovering new ideas, techniques, and inspiration on these platforms. I’ve also been diving into personal development books, which have been transformative for my mindset and growth.

One of my favorite podcasts is Balanced Black Girl on Spotify. It’s a beautiful blend of relatable conversations and actionable insights that encourage balance and self-care in all aspects of life.

Beyond these tools, I’m constantly doing research—whether it’s about business, personal growth, relationships, or emotional and mental well-being. I believe learning never stops, and I’m always seeking ways to evolve.

But above all, my number one resource is God. I lean on Him for everything—guidance, strength, and clarity. My faith is the foundation that keeps me grounded and helps me navigate the highs and lows of this journey.
