Today we’d like to introduce you to Tajee Reid Williams
Hi Tajee, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
From an early age, I was naturally inclined towards teaching. It started with informal sessions where I helped students in my community. These experiences were not only fulfilling but also highlighted my ability to explain concepts clearly and inspire learning. The joy and satisfaction from these interactions made me realize that teaching was more than just an activity—it was a calling. To this day, every teachers’ day, I can look forward to a gratitude note from my cousin’s mom after helping her child with reading when she was younger.
As I grew older, this calling became even more apparent. I pursued a career in teaching, driven by a profound sense of purpose and a desire to make a difference in the lives of others. The classroom became my stage, a place where I could nurture minds, encourage curiosity, and foster a love for learning.
However, my journey didn’t end there. Over time, I developed a deeper passion for advocacy within the education sector. I recognized the importance of being a voice for the voiceless and addressing challenging issues that many shy away from. Whether it’s discussing educational inequities, pushing for better resources, or supporting students with diverse needs, I have embraced the role of an advocate.
Being a teacher is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about empowering students and addressing the broader issues that impact their education. My purpose as a teacher has evolved to include both instruction and advocacy, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Was my journey to teaching smooth? No, it was anything but. During my first year as a teacher, I faced poor leadership and a lack of guidance, nearly driving me out of the profession. I struggled with classroom management in that initial job, which lasted only eight months. Additionally, I found myself overwhelmed by the heavy burdens my students carried. My empathy for their struggles, particularly their socioeconomic challenges, such as lacking necessities like shoes and meals, made it difficult to accept that I couldn’t solve all their problems.
Driven by my passion for learning and helping others, I immersed myself in every possible aspect of teaching. However, my coworkers often perceived this enthusiasm as excessive, leading to strained relationships. Despite these challenges, my commitment to making a difference in my students’ lives has remained steadfast.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
For the past nine years, I have had the privilege of teaching at the primary school level, with experiences spanning across Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. My academic background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education from the Catholic College of Mandeville and a Master’s Degree in Education, specializing in Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction, from Walden University. Teaching is more than just a profession to me; it is a true passion. I absolutely enjoy the opportunity to care for and nurture young minds. The diversity of my students enriches my teaching experience, bringing unique perspectives and challenges that make each day in the classroom exciting and rewarding.
What are you most proud of?
One of my fondest memories in the classroom is the light-hearted discussions I have with my students. These moments not only foster a positive learning environment but also strengthen our bond. The most rewarding aspect of my job is witnessing my students’ progress and achievements. Seeing the satisfaction on their faces when they realize their hard work has paid off is incredibly fulfilling.
What sets you apart from others?
In recent times, I have envisioned extending my impact beyond the classroom. This led to the creation of my podcast, “Teach It Your Way,” which I started recording in 2022. The podcast serves as a platform for teachers to discuss issues impacting the education system, not just to highlight problems but to propose practical solutions. It aims to build strong partnerships between teachers and parents, fostering a supportive community for educational growth. Additionally, I have recently released a magazine on Issuu and hope to host it on other platforms as well. This magazine is another step in my journey to connect, inspire, and support educators and parents alike.
What is your goal with your podcast and magazine?
“Teach It Your Way” has a mission to reach educators globally, letting them know they are seen and valued. Each teacher has unique abilities to deliver lessons in their own way, and my goal is to inspire both seasoned and new educators, giving them hope and confidence in the great work we do in the classroom.
My journey as a teacher is driven by a deep love for education and a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of my students and the broader educational community.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to others who desire to join the profession is that witnessing the growth and development of others entrusted in your care is beautiful. Please make sure that you build a strong support network and embrace lifelong learning.
These children are depending on you. Whenever I think about giving up when things get hard, I tell myself that a student needs me because they may not have that love at home.
Also, my first experience as a teacher shaped me, and now I am under the leadership of a phenomenal principal who sees my worth.
