Rising Stars: Meet Andrea Salas of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Salas

ANDREA, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Since I was a child, I dreamed of being part of the television world. Initially, I wanted to become a singer, but my shyness led me to shift my focus to the behind-the-scenes aspects of the industry. I began knocking on doors, trying to start my career at one of the biggest networks in Latin America, Televisa in Mexico City.

After several attempts, I finally joined Televisa. My communication and musical skills greatly aided me in this journey. I started from scratch, learning everything about production—from pre-recorded segments to live broadcasts, directing, editing, and music editing. I immersed myself in all aspects of production, eventually managing budgets and taking responsibility for entire productions.

Throughout my time there, I worked on special events, children’s shows, musical channels, short series, and news. I eventually became for 2 years the Director of News Production and Operations. In this role, I specialized in live broadcasts, managing large teams and overseeing production operations.

After 28 years at Televisa, I felt it was time to explore new opportunities for professional growth. I was invited to join NBC Telemundo as an Executive Producer based in Mexico City, which excited me, as I had not yet produced long-form series and was eager to do so. I spent two years there before moving to Miami in January 2022 to lead a new position as VP of Scripted Production and Business Operations.

In this role, I oversee all scripted production and manage the Telemundo Studios operations team. Currently, I am developing ideas and providing consultancy while continuing my journey of professional growth in the industry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the primary obstacles I’ve faced throughout my career has been working in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. Being a woman in this role hasn’t always been easy, as it required me to work even harder to step into the spotlight and be recognized for my contributions.

However, my experience with NBC Universal marked a significant change. The teams I’ve worked with there have mostly been composed of women, which has been incredibly empowering. It’s inspiring to see the world gradually opening more opportunities for women, and I am proud to be part of this progressive movement towards equality in the workplace.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
