Today we’d like to introduce you to Alvaro Mercado
Alvaro, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started in the creative industry with a background in graphic design, which soon expanded into filmmaking. Early on, I was fascinated by the power of blending design, photography, and cinematography, and this fusion of disciplines has been incredibly enriching, driving me to pursue storytelling in new ways.
Over the years, my passion evolved beyond simply creating. I found myself drawn to entrepreneurship, realizing the importance of building a team and aligning others with a shared vision. This approach led me to significant milestones and creative projects beyond the typical “day-to-day” work.
A turning point in my career came with the release of my debut feature film, Quiero Ser Youtuber, which I directed, shot, and managed in post-production. The film was especially rewarding, as I led an all-female crew—from sound operators to grips and gaffers—and it enjoyed considerable success, with a nationwide release and a screening at an international festival.
Following that, I directed Kallawayas, a documentary that went on to win six awards, including honors from film festivals in New York, Mexico, and the U.S. Now, my focus is in the United States, where I’m working on a horror series for a streaming platform. The pilot has been officially released, and we’re actively pursuing investment for an upcoming film project that already has promising prospects for U.S. distribution—but I won’t spoil any surprises!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. Every step has come with its share of obstacles, and while it may sound cliché, each one taught me invaluable lessons. The hardest part has been learning to unlearn. As the industry evolves, so much of what we once relied on becomes obsolete. Staying relevant means constantly shedding old habits, approaches, and even knowledge to make room for new perspectives and skills.
This process of unlearning and relearning is often more challenging than the initial learning itself, as it requires a readiness to let go of what you thought you knew. Adapting to the rapid shifts in the creative world has been one of my greatest tests, but also the most enriching experience. It has taught me resilience and the importance of being flexible in an ever-changing industry.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a filmmaker, photographer, and designer, and I run my own LLC, where I aim to blend artistic inspiration with business acumen. My focus is on creating work that feels genuine and impactful, whether through film, commercial photography, or design. I work to ensure that inspiration and art are aligned with the demands of the business side, achieving a balance that brings out the best of both worlds.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just any particular piece I’ve created, but the journey that’s shaped me. My life itself has been the foundation, providing me with the experiences and insights that drive my creative work today. This journey has taught me to value authenticity and resilience, and it’s given me the tools to create in a way that feels truly fulfilling. What sets me apart is my commitment to honoring this path, using each project to express not only my skills but also the perspective that my life has given me.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
For me, the biggest risk has often been not taking chances. Even the smallest decisions can lead to major opportunities, and I’ve learned that being cautious can sometimes mean missing out on transformative moments.
One of my greatest risks was investing everything—financially, physically, and emotionally—into my first film. It was truly an all-or-nothing situation; I poured my entire capital and energy into making it a success. It felt like success or nothing. But looking back, I realize that taking that leap was crucial, and it taught me the value of committing fully to what I believe in. Risk, to me, isn’t just about the possibility of failure; it’s about giving everything to what matters most, even when the outcome is uncertain.
