Today we’d like to introduce you to Caro Mejia
Caro, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a journalist originally from Cancún, Mexico. In 2002, I moved to Denver, Colorado, where I worked as a local news reporter for Telemundo and TV Azteca.
In 2010 I decided to sell everything and I took a year off to travel the world with my boyfriend (now my husband), doing volunteer work in every country we visited.
Following that incredible adventure, we decided to settle in Miami, get married, and start a family but always with the dream to travel again for anaother year of volunteer work as a family.
And the dream became a reality 6 years later!
In 2018, my husband and I—together with our two young children, then four and six years old—took an entire school year off to volunteer in a remote town in Northeastern Brazil. I had just self-published my children’s book, Lion Heart Goes to School, with the purpose to donate 50% of the income to different Non-profits around the world helping women and children; but I had thousands of printed copies ready to sell and, at the time, I thought it might be a bad idea to leave the country because I needed to promote the book. But we had always dreamed of giving our kids an adventure abroad and planting in them the seed of service.
So, off we went!
Throughout our time in Brazil, I shared moments from our journey on my Instagram page, @Mama_CaroMejia, and slowly, other families began following along. During our volunteer work, we cleaned kilometers of beaches, I taught meditation at the local elementary school, and, with the help of the local community, we built the first public children’s library using a container and the hands of hundreds of volunteers.
When we returned to Miami in 2019, my Instagram account had grown to 5,000 followers, so I decided to keep creating content and promoting my children’s book. My initial goal was to build a following of 10,000 to help spread the word about my book. But then the pandemic hit, and I turned to humor as a way to cope with everything that was happening. My following quickly grew to 100,000.
From this growth, LaMamaLatina.com and a YouTube channel were born. Through these platforms, I share family content with a mix of comedy and educational insights. I also host a podcast, Caro Mejía Podcast, where I interview experts on family-related topics.
My dream is to travel the world again, serving communities and inspiring others to dedicate some of their time to leaving the world a little better than we found it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been so many challenges along the way!
Being an immigrant is never easy! When I moved to the US more than 20 years ago, I didn’t speak English and it took everything from me to learn how to speak, write and read to get a good job.
But even more difficult as an immigrant was to become a mom without my family near by to help me raise my kids and I struggled, in the fisrt years of my kids, with depression and anxiety disorders.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a full time content creator on social media, YouTube and my blog LaMamaLatina.com where I talk about family matters with tons of humor and the help of experts on different topics.
I am known for my sense of humor and the scketches I create that reflect the life of latina moms in the United States.
I think what sets me apart is that I strongly advocate for women’s mental health and a conscious, yet real, parenting styles.
How do you think about luck?
I have no doubt that “luck” is the magical spot where perseverance and apportunities intersect. People call it luck but in reality there is always hard work behind.
